Job description

City of Dover Community Services Department - Laborer/Truck Driver

The City of Dover Community Services Department is seeking three Laborers (or Truck Drivers depending on qualifications) to perform a variety of routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor duties involving the construction and maintenance of highways, sidewalks, and storm drainage projects.

This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position with a pay rate of $19.07 to $27.56 per hour. The position is open until filled.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Perform labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling, and raising old manhole covers and catch basins to road level for street reconstruction.
  2. Assist skilled and semi-skilled workers in tasks such as removing trees, mixing and pouring cement, laying asphalt, patching streets, and repairing water and sewer lines, as well as maintaining park facilities and performing landscaping duties.
  3. Assist with operation of jet truck, camera truck, and other light and medium-sized construction and power equipment.
  4. Support snow removal operations, including operating small trucks or sidewalk plows, and attaching/removing snow plows and sanders from vehicles.
  5. Assist in activities to mitigate conditions caused by extreme weather, natural, and man-made disasters.
  6. Operate and maintain hand tools and machinery such as mowers, chainsaws, and weed whackers.
  7. Occasionally perform traffic control at job sites.
  8. Operate trucks and motorized equipment as needed.
  9. Maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
  10. Be available 24/7 for emergency situations.
  11. Follow safe work procedures related to assigned tasks.
  12. Perform other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Basic knowledge of and ability to use simple hand and power tools. Ability to perform routine manual labor for extended periods under varying weather conditions. Sufficient physical strength, conditioning, and agility are required.

Education, Licensure, and Certification

High school diploma or equivalent, with at least one year of experience in construction, road maintenance, or trade work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid Operator’s license required; CDL-B license with air brake and tanker endorsement preferred.
