Job summary

The City of Ames is seeking a Public Safety Dispatcher for the Ames Police Department to manage a complex communications system, handle emergency and non-emergency calls, and dispatch police, fire, and EMS as needed. The position requires working in a 24/7/365 environment with shift assignments and potential overtime.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of high school, HiSet, or G.E.D. is required.
• Two years relevant work experience, including teamwork in fast paced environments, may be preferred.

Responsibilities

• Answer emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatch appropriate services.
• Relay messages to personnel and coordinate with police, fire, and EMS.
• Monitor and operate dispatch software, radio consoles, and related equipment.
• Maintain logs and records of unit status and communications.
• Adapt to shift work and maintain composure during emergencies.
