Description

What You’ll Do:

As our Power Systems Model Engineering Intern, you’ll contribute to the accuracy and reliability of MISO’s grid models by supporting model validation, data mapping, and process improvements across our Modeling team — helping keep the datasets that power system reliability and market operations accurate for 45 million people across the U.S. and Canada.

You’ll gain hands‑on experience with:

  • Industry‑standard modeling tools like Siemens’ CIM‑based Model Manager and GE’s Energy Management System (EMS)
  • Coding and automation (Python, C++, or Perl) to streamline model validation and data cleanup
  • Real‑world projects such as improving modeling workflows, resolving data mapping issues, or supporting MISO’s custom modeling applications — the specific focus depends on your team assignment

A Great Day in This Role Means:

Depending on your team, you might validate model data, help resolve a mapping issue between systems, or improve the workflow the Modeling team relies on every day. You'll document your findings and communicate them to your immediate team and any internal group with a stake in the outcome.

You’ll know you’re making an impact when your work resolves a challenge the team faced, streamlines a process, or directly improves the accuracy of a model used across the business.

This is a Unique Opportunity Because:

MISO’s Modeling team builds one of the largest and most complex electric grid models in the world, gathering system and infrastructure data from utilities across MISO’s footprint and neighboring regions. The datasets this team produces feed nearly every group that supports system reliability and markets, so your work touches business areas across the entire company. It’s also a chance to build broad business acumen and learn about MISO’s footprint, stakeholders, and role in the industry.

What You’ll Be Proud to Share:

  • Supported real‑world energy market modeling by collaborating with cross‑functional engineering teams and assisting with materials used in internal technical reviews.
  • Gained hands‑on experience improving model accuracy and applying professional communication skills to explain complex engineering concepts to cross‑functional audiences.
  • Developed hands‑on expertise with industry tools (Siemens’ CIM‑based Model Manager, GE’s EMS) and MISO’s custom modeling applications.

Qualifications at a Glance:

Term: June 2 – August 13, 2027 | Full‑time | Paid

Location: Carmel, IN | Housing available for qualified students

Academic Level: Undergraduate (select teams also open to graduate students)

Degree: Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Software Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, or Electrical & Computer Engineering Technology

Required Technical Skills:

  • Experience with a common programming language or coding techniques (Python preferred)
  • Common Microsoft tools like PowerPoint and Word

Preferred Skills:

  • Coding course experience in Python, C++, or Perl
  • Coursework in Electric Power Systems
  • A self‑starter mindset with curiosity about MISO, and the ability to work well both independently and within a team

By the End of Your Internship, You’ll Walk Away With:

  • A tangible impact story (e.g., “I resolved a data mapping issue that streamlined our team’s model cycle”)
  • Stronger technical skills (model validation, data cleanup, process documentation) and soft skills (communicating technical work to cross‑functional teams)
  • A deep understanding of how large‑scale grid modeling supports system reliability and market operations
  • Expanded professional network across MISO and the energy industry
  • A strong résumé bullet such as: “Supported real‑world energy market modeling at MISO, improving model accuracy and streamlining data validation processes used across the business.”
