Job description

2027 Summer Intern - Power Systems Engineering (Graduate)

As our Power Systems Engineering Intern, you’ll contribute to the reliability of MISO’s grid by supporting power flow studies, model development, and process automation across our Planning and Operations teams.

You’ll gain hands‑on experience with:

  • Industry tools like PSS®E, TARA, and EMS
  • Coding and automation using Python and SQL to streamline planning studies, model updates, and operational workflows
  • Real‑world projects such as contingency analysis, transmission planning studies, outage coordination automation, or reliability coordination tools — the specific focus depends on your team assignment

A Great Day in This Role Means:

Here’s what that can look like on one team: you review load forecasts ranging from the next day to 10 years in the future and outage schedules, then run contingency simulations in TARA or PSS®E. You identify potential grid constraints and summarize your findings for the team — using them to help develop new transmission facilities or feeding directly into Operating Guides. Not every team’s day looks exactly like this, but the throughline holds across placements.

You’ll know you’re making an impact when your analysis feeds directly into a decision that keeps the grid running — whether that’s an Operating Guide, a planning study, or a tool the team relies on every day.

This is a Unique Opportunity Because:

These teams sit at the intersection of long‑range transmission planning and day‑to‑day grid operations — some roles include direct exposure to shift work and the Control Room, giving you a front‑row seat to how planning decisions made years in advance connect to what happens on the grid today. Beyond the technical work, you’ll be paired with a manager and a mentor, connect with a cross‑departmental buddy to build your network, and hear from other teams during lunch‑and‑learn sessions. You’ll wrap up the summer presenting your project findings to department leaders and company executives — real visibility for real work.

What You’ll Be Proud to Share:

  • Contributed to a planning study or automation tool that engineers and operators actually rely on.
  • Performed a power flow study to assess the impact of an actual transmission project for a MISO Transmission Owner.
  • Presented your summer project findings to department leaders and company executives.
  • Built a professional network across MISO's Planning and Operations teams and beyond through your summer buddy and lunch‑and‑learn connections.

  • A deep understanding of how planning and real-time operations connect at RTO scale
