Job summary

General Motors seeks a Quality Engineer Intern for an onsite Indiana facility. You will drive problem solving by analyzing data and collaborating with production, engineering, suppliers and supplier quality teams.

You will assist with part measurements, containment of non-conforming products, and reporting issues to the Quality Systems Manager, while supporting launches and process improvements within GMS.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Quality Engineering.
  • Graduating between August 2027 and June 2029.
  • Able to work full-time, 40 hours/week.
  • Willing to work in a plant environment.
  • Preferred: reading part drawings and interpretation of part measurements.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to distill complex topics for a wider audience.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with production and engineering on part measurement results to part print specifications to assure quality and reliability.
  • Ensure effective containment and resolution to identified non-conforming product.
  • Communicate emerging issues daily to Quality Systems Manager.
  • Coordinate repair, rework, and containment activities for spills.
  • Validate supplier scrap.
  • Work with SPPS on supplier-related issues.
  • Support PTR process by running PTRs and evaluating impact.
  • Support launch activities of new products.
  • Support implementation of all elements within GMS.

What You’ll Do:

Looking for a position that demonstrates your high level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult? As a Quality Engineer Intern at GM would drive problem solving and resolutions based on data driven solutions to suppliers and internal customers. Your work would involve functioning as a technical liaison between production operations, engineering, suppliers, and supplier quality at a GM manufacturing plant.

Responsibilities:
  • Interact with production and engineering on part measurement results to part print specifications to assure quality and reliability

  • Ensure effective containment and resolution to identified non-conforming product

  • Communicate emerging issues for responsible components daily to Quality Systems Manager

  • Coordinate repair, rework, and containment activities for identified spills

  • Validate supplier scrap

  • Work with Supplier Practical Problem Solving (SPPS) process on supplier related issues

  • Support the PTR Process by running PTR's and evaluating impact on the product / function

  • Support launch activities of new products

  • Support the implementation and effective adherence to all elements within GMS

Required Qualifications:
  • Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Quality Engineering

  • Must be graduating between August 2027 and June 2029

  • Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week

  • Must be willing to work in a plant environment

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficient in reading part drawings and interpretation of part measurements

  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience

  • Evidence of strong character with integrity, honesty, accountability and trust

  • Consistently demonstrates innovative thinking that is customer‑centric

  • Excellent project management skills and the proven ability to manage multiple projects at any given

Specific physical requirements of the position include the ability to:

  • Walk and stand for prolonged periods of time.

  • Read standardized work instructions, operate machines and tools, and perform quality inspections.

  • Promptly detect and respond to safety instructions, alarms, and signals. Wear personal protective equipment, for example: safety glasses, gloves, hats, ear plugs, and safety shoes.

  • Work in a loud manufacturing environment that is not climate controlled (conditions can be hot or cold).

  • Frequently and repetitively bend, twist, kneel, crouch, and reach to perform work.

  • Lift or carry materials weighing up to 15 pounds and periodically carry or lift materials weighing up to 40 lbs.

  • Occasionally sit, climb (including ladders and lifts) and drive vehicles and equipment.

Work Arrangement:

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their assigned facility on a full-time basis.

Each successful candidate will be offered an onsite role at a specific location. Candidate location preferences are considered but cannot be guaranteed.

GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2027 Student Program – to help facilitate administration of relocation benefits, please apply using the permanent address you would move from. Start dates for this internship role are May 24th and June 14th of 2027.
