Job summary

AbbVie Worcester is seeking a six‑month Co‑op in Project Engineering to lead and manage capital projects involving biologics equipment, facilities and utilities. You will coordinate with internal teams and external contractors, advancing projects from scope through execution during the winter to summer term.

The role develops user requirements, P&ID diagrams, specifications for automation, and requires strong communication, planning, and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in university pursuing a Bachelor’s in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Must be enrolled for at least one semester after co-op.
• Expected graduation between Dec 2027 – Jun 2028.
• Strong communication skills, planning and organizational abilities.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Demonstrates integrity, reliability, adaptability, and self-motivation.
• Commit to a 6-month in-person co-op at AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA (Jan–Jul).

Responsibilities

• Provide overall management of capital projects through full life-cycle, including scope, scheduling, budgeting and interdepartmental coordination.
• Develop project scope, cost estimates, CAPEX requests and financial defense packages; manage resources and procurements.
• Create user requirements and P&ID diagrams for biologics equipment; define technical specs for automation.
• Identify internal and external resource needs for projects.
• Assist procurement with requisitions for equipment and labor per AbbVie policies.
• Prepare and deliver periodic project status reports to stakeholders.

Job Description

The Project Engineering or Capital Project Engineering team at AbbVie’s Worcester location is responsible for the engineering and management of capital projects involving biologics related equipment, facilities, and utilities. Project Engineers are therefore the lead engineer as well as the project managers for the capital projects that they work on.

Co-op within the Project Engineering team are assigned their own capital projects to manage and execute. As part of the project management of each project the co-op will need to engage with and coordinate with other teams within the Worcester site in order to complete each project. Depending on the scope of each project this often includes coordination with external contractors as well in order to complete the installation of equipment.

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing overall management of capital projects through the entire project life-cycle including scope management, scheduling, budgeting and coordinating activities interdepartmentally and with contractors.
• Project scope development based on customer requirements, cost estimation, request of capital expenditure and preparation of financial defense package, scheduling, resource allocation, vendor and contractor management, and status reporting
• Development of user requirements, biologics equipment P&ID’s (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), technical/functional specifications to support automation programming and processes.
• Identify project resources needs both internally and externally.
• Assist in the procurement process and generate purchase requisitions for all project equipment and labor purchases according to relevant Abbvie policies and procedures.
• Prepare and deliver periodic project status reports to all internal project stakeholders (internal customers, engineering and plant management, etc) according to Abbvie site policies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Bachelor’s in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or other related field
• Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the co-op
• Expected graduation date between December 2027 – June 2028
• Demonstrated oral/written communication skills
• Demonstrated planning and organizational skills
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
• Demonstrated integrity, reliability, dedication, adaptability, innovation, and self-motivation
• Must be able to commit to a 6-month duration in-person at AbbVie Bioresearch Center (ABC) in Worcester, MA (January - July).

Preferred Qualifications

• Exposure to Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing or Biologics Equipment Operation
• Experience with cGMP and Good Documentation Practices
• Demonstrated interpersonal, collaboration, and effective teamwork skills
