Job summary

Michael Best & Friedrich LLP invites engineering and science students to apply for the EDGE Patent Engineer Internship Program in Milwaukee. The paid internship runs from late May 2027 to late July 2027, offering hands-on patent research, technical writing, and mentoring from patent professionals.

You will learn patent law basics, work closely with engineers, agents, and attorneys, and have opportunities for firm-sponsored travel. A formal performance review process is included.

Qualifications

• Enrollment in a bachelors, masters, or Ph.D. degree program majoring in one of the listed engineering/science disciplines.
• Graduation date in 2027 or 2028 is preferred, but not required.
• Passion for technology and interest in patent law; no prior patent law experience necessary.
• Highly proficient research and analytical skills; detail-oriented with strong time management.

Responsibilities

• Engage in patent research and technical writing for cutting-edge technologies.
• Receive paid training from experienced patent agents/attorneys.
• Interact with clients and patent examiners at the USPTO; potentially travel between offices.
• Take ownership of projects and participate in mentored goal-setting and evaluations.

Michael Best is seekingEngineering and Science studentswho wish to explore the world of Intellectual Property to apply for a paid internship in ourEDGE Patent Engineer Internship Program. This summer internship program will take placeapproximately fromthe end of May 2027 to the end of July 2027.

• Challenging work assignments including patent research and technical writing forcutting edgetechnologies
• Paid training from experienced patent agents and attorneys and a generous weekly rate

• Client interaction as well as interaction with patent examiners at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
• Potential firm-sponsored travel to other Michael Best offices
• Opportunity to take ownership of and control over your projects

We will teach you the basics of patent law through in-depth training covering topics such as:

• What is a patent
• How to analyze and research new inventions
• How to draft patent applications
• How the patent application process works with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

While working closely with our highly skilled engineers, patent agents, and patent attorneys, we will introduce you to patent law. A dedicated mentor will also help you set goals, manage projects,network, and access available resources to ensure your time spent at Michael Best is successful and rewarding. At the midpoint and end of your internship, your mentor will also meet with you to conduct a formal performance appraisal and provide valuable feedback.

Job Requirements

• The program will be hosted in our Milwaukee office; however, you may have theoptionto be placed in other offices if you receive a full-time offer after graduation.

Mechanical Subgroup:

• Enrollment in a bachelors, masters, or Ph.D. degree program majoring in one of the following: Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Material Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or Civil Engineering.

Electrical Subgroup:

• Enrollment in a bachelors, masters, or Ph.D. degree program majoring in one of the following: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Physics.

Life Science and Chemical Subgroup:

• Enrollment in a Ph.D. degree program in one of the following: Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience, Medicinal Chemistry, Immunology, Structural Biology, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or Inorganic Chemistry.
• A graduation date in 2027 or 2028 is preferred, but is notrequired
• Passion for technology and a genuine interest in patent law (however, nopreviousexperience in patent law is necessary)
• Highly proficient research and analytical skills
• Detail-oriented with excellent time management and follow-up skills
• Strong initiative to gain experience and take on challenges
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Valid authorization to work in the U.S. isrequired
• Degree must qualify for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office registration examination
