Job summary

General Dynamics Electric Boat is offering a Summer Internship in which enrolled students will work with Waterfront Engineering – Fast Attack Submarines to tackle real engineering challenges for the U.S. Navy.

You will gain exposure to multiple disciplines and contribute to high-impact projects on submarine design and ongoing VIRGINIA and COLUMBIA Class programs. The internship emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and hands-on experience in design, testing, and maintenance, with opportunities

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Provide troubleshooting support on the submarines.
• Investigate and document technical responses to non-conformances.
• Support emergent issue problem resolution.
• Resolve supplier product issues.
• Modify technical manuals and publications.
• Perform calculations.
• Communicate with Navy customers via technical submittals.
• Investigate and document design changes.
• Submit test procedure modifications.
• Participate in ship testing.
• Prepare for and execute maintenance and modernization availabilities.
• Construction engineering work including shipboard troubleshooting and test instrumentation equipment design and implementation.

The Waterfront Engineering - Fast Attack Submarines directorate plays a critical role in bringing submarines from design to reality. Waterfront Engineering personnel solve tough shipyard challenges, improve construction productivity, and keep testing and delivery on track. You'll be part of a team that thrives on problem-solving and innovative thinking to ensure every submarine meets the highest standards.

What You'll Do

During your internship, you may be responsible for any of the following tasks:

Program Highlights

• Duration:A minimum of 8 weeks during Summer 2027.
• Location:The position is on-siteand you may be placed in any of the following locations:
  • Connecticut: Groton, New London, North Stonington
  • Rhode Island: North Kingstown, Newport
  • Georgia: Kings Bay
  • Washington: Puget Sound
• Relocation Assistance:This internship isnot eligiblefor a housing stipend or relocation assistance.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

• Enrolled full-time at a College or University
• Completed at least Freshman year by Summer 2027
• Pursuing a B.S. or M.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural/Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Marine Engineering, Facilities Engineering, Chemical Engineering and/or Energy Systems Engineering.

Availability Requirements:

• Willing and able to work 40 hours per week for at least 8 consecutive weeks between May 2027 to September 2027.
