Job summary

New York Life's Summer Actuarial Internship Program (Tampa) is a 12-week, hands-on opportunity starting mid-May in our Tampa, FL office. You’ll engage in challenging assignments across actuarial functions and meet NYL Direct leaders, with mentorship and a path to full-time opportunities.

Open to recent graduates or students pursuing actuarial credentials, the program emphasizes collaboration, learning, and practical application of actuarial science to real products and pricing.

Qualifications

• Passage of one or more Society of Actuaries exams (toward ASA/FSA).
• Recent or upcoming graduate with a relevant degree.
• Strong communication and analytical abilities.
• Familiarity with modeling tools and programming is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Develop premiums and benefits for new or enhanced insurance products.
• Design new products and product features.
• Project profitability of the company’s products.
• Prepare studies on financial experience and valuations.
• Perform actuarial research and statistical analysis.
• Build and test actuarial models; complete statutory requirements.

Role Overview:

New York Life’s Summer Actuarial Internship Program (Tampa) is a structured, 12-week program starting in mid‑May and ending in mid‑August located in our Tampa, FL Office. Our internship provides students with the opportunity to participate in challenging assignments and practical on the job experience for our New York Life Direct operation. In 1994, the company opened its direct marketing ('Direct') operation in Tampa, FL, which markets Group Life insurance products to AARP members. As part of New York Life Direct, you’ll join a team revolutionizing the life insurance experience for AARP members. We’re the industry leader in direct‑to‑consumer life insurance, offering streamlined coverage directly to individuals, bypassing traditional agent models. Your work will directly impact lives by making life insurance accessible, affordable, and understandable for millions of Americans.

• Challenging assignments and practical on the job experience
• Exposure to a variety of actuarial functions, including experience studies, valuation, pricing, model development, and forecasting

• Actuaries at New York Life are actively involved in many aspects of the company’s operations, including the design and pricing of products, the evaluation of the company’s financial results, and setting the strategic vision of the company. We provide our actuarial interns with challenging actuarial projects to expose them to the theoretical and practical applications of actuarial science.

What You’ll Do

• An intern’s job responsibilities are dependent on placement, and may include assisting with:
• Developing premiums and benefits for new or enhanced insurance products
• Designing new products and product features
• Projecting profitability generated by the company’s products
• Preparing studies on financial experience
• Performing actuarial research and statistical analysis
• Completing Statutory and Tax valuation requirements
• Building and testing actuarial models
• Performing special projects as assigned

Required qualifications

• Passage of one or more Society of Actuaries exams (working toward ASA/FSA designation)
• A recent or upcoming college graduate, with a Bachelor’s degree with an accredited college or university (preferred majors in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Sciences, Economics, or Finance)
• Prefer cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Strong written and oral communication, and strong interpersonal skills
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
• Prefer knowledge of modeling packages, programming languages, and spreadsheet/database software

Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual’s experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
