The job of Registered Nurse is to assess the health needs of students, create and implement individualized health care plans and emergency action plans under the direction of external physicians, provide care for ill, medically fragile, and injured students, conduct mandated health screenings, identify health issues for referral, and serve as 504 Coordinator.
- Administers first aid, medications, and specialized medical procedures (e.g., oral suctioning, catheterization, tube feeding, stoma care) to provide necessary care for injured, ill, medically fragile, or complex children.
- Administers screenings (e.g., vision) to refer medical conditions for appropriate care.
- Assesses situations involving student safety, abuse, and other health-related issues to identify problems, refer for treatment, and comply with legal requirements.
- Case‑manages student medical 504 accommodations to ensure classroom staff are informed of identified accommodations.
- Collaborates with stakeholders (parents, health care providers, therapists, public agencies) to promote and secure student health services and advise parties of changes in student health status.
- Develops individualized emergency care plans and directs site personnel or implements directions from parents or physicians.
- Maintains students' confidential files and records (health history, care plans, referrals, accident reports) to meet legal and professional standards.
- Participates in meetings, seminars, and interdisciplinary teams to gather information on students' health needs and improve service delivery.
- Provides resources on health and medical topics (wellness, nutrition, treatment protocols, childhood diseases) to staff, students, parents, and the public.
- Provides training and education on health subjects (medication administration, wellness, health promotion, growth and development, emergency response) to promote a healthy lifestyle.
- Refers students requiring additional medical attention to support parent/guardian in securing follow‑up treatment.
- Reports health and safety issues to the assigned administrator and agencies to maintain students’ safety and a positive learning environment.
- Responds to emergency medical situations (life‑threatening allergic reactions, adverse prescription results, acute trauma) to provide immediate medical attention and follow‑up action.
Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Knowledge: mathematical concepts (algebra, geometry), reading technical information, composing documents, facilitating discussions, and analyzing situations. Specific knowledge includes medical information, health standards, infection control, stages of child development, pediatric and family nursing, community health concepts, Missouri regulations, and nursing practice standards.
Skills: administration of medications, calculation of insulin‑carbohydrate ratios, adherence to safety practices, handling hazardous materials, operating clinical equipment (insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitors), using office software (Word, Excel, Adobe, TEAMS), and maintaining accurate records.
Abilities: scheduling activities, gathering and classifying data, adapting to changing priorities, communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, working as part of a team, and operating equipment safely.
Work under limited supervision following standardized practices, direct other personnel within a small work unit, operate within a defined budget, and utilize resources from other work units as needed.
Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; stooping, kneeling, crouching; fine finger dexterity. Approximately 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing. Exposure to risk of injury and illness.
Job‑related experience in nursing and an Associate’s degree in nursing.
Bachelor’s in Nursing.
Community College or Vocational School degree in a related area.

CPR/First Aid Certificate and an unrestricted Missouri Registered Nursing License.
Maintains required certificates and licenses.
Criminal background clearance.
