Position Title: 2026-27 Graduate Assistant – Communication Studies

Department of Communication Studies seeks graduate students as applicants for Graduate Assistant.

Anticipated Appointment Dates
  • Summer 5W1 May 26, 2026 – July 2, 2026
  • Summer 5W2 July 6, 2026 – August 12, 2026
  • Fall 2026: August 21, 2026 – December 23, 2026
  • Spring 2027: January 21, 2027– May 29, 2027

Hours/Units per week: Students can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester.

Job Duties
  • Provide professional non‑teaching assistance to faculty member.
  • Provide research assistance and practical experience in fields related to their advanced study.
  • Assist with handling or training other students in the use of equipment or other resources.
  • Assist faculty with research and preparation of course materials.
  • Participate in evaluation of students’ work.

Instructional support includes, but is not limited to, proctoring and grading examinations, recording grades, conducting small discussion groups and/or meeting individually with students in scheduled office hours to clarify course material for students enrolled in large lecture courses, and other related tasks.

Program‑level support includes, but is not limited to, assisting faculty with research, editorial and administrative work associated with the DTLA Communication Studies Completion BA program, the Lancaster Prison Program / Prison Graduation Initiative, and the production of Colloquy, the academic journal of the Department of Communication Studies.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Degree‑seeking graduate student in the Department of Communication Studies; graduate assistant must be currently enrolled in or admitted to a Cal State LA graduate degree program.
  • Graduates admitted to the Master Program in the Department of Communication Studies in good academic standing.
  • Enrollment in course(s) for the semester towards the degree.
  • Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and a potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications

Good research skills, writing proficiency, agility in using educational technology, and an ability to mentor undergraduate students. Understanding of quantitative, qualitative, or rhetorical theories and research methods, as appropriate to the content of the assigned class, is also preferred.

Salary

Initial Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary schedule information for a Graduate Assistant‑monthly: 12‑month Classification is available based on the following ranges:

Salary Range: $3,408 – $6,072 per month.
