Position Title: 2026-27 AY Lecturer Pool - English

Department: Department of English

Position Type: Instructional Faculty – Part‑time Temporary/Lecturer Pool

Position Details

The English Department in the College of Arts and Letters at Cal State LA is seeking applications for a pool of part‑time faculty lecturers with positions available as determined by need during the 2026‑2027 academic year. Positions will be filled as needed for each academic semester. Part‑time faculty lecturers are hired with conditional appointments based on enrollment and budget. Hires from the pool of applicants are made when there are instructional needs to fill coursework offered by an academic department based on changing enrollment patterns, changes to tenure‑track faculty assignments, and other factors that cannot be addressed with existing faculty. Initial appointments are typically for one semester, but occasionally academic‑year initial appointments are made. Appointments may be renewed based on department needs, funding, and performance. Often appointments are made just prior to the start of the semester so some faculty lecturers may need to be available on very short notice.

Minimum Qualifications

• Candidate must have a master’s degree in English or in a closely related field from an accredited university.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching at a college level.
• Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment.
• Demonstrated experience and commitment to student‑centered learning and teaching.
• Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.
• Relevant work experience and training.
• For writing courses: training and experience in teaching writing at all levels from basic to advanced; training and experience in assessing writing; training and experience in teaching critical thinking, writing, and technical writing.
• For linguistics and literature courses ranging from general education through upper‑division major courses: preference for applicants whose training and experience fills existing gaps in the department, including in African American Literatures, Transpacific Literatures, and Creative Writing.
• Preference for an appropriate doctoral or terminal degree if applicable to the particular courses to be staffed.
• Preference for faculty who demonstrate the relevance of English studies to the diverse student and local communities through community engagement, equity‑ and justice‑based approaches to teaching, or racially and ethnically conscious pedagogies.

Duties

• Instruction, class preparation, grading, and office hours.
• Other duties may be assigned based on departmental needs.
• Course assignments, including dates, time, and modality, are made by the Department Chair under the direction of the College Dean.
• Participation in mid‑term and end‑of‑term course and program assessment activities.
• Commitment to the academic success of all students and to an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity and differences.

Salary

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The following ranges are based on the faculty lecturer salary schedule (as of 7/1/2024):

• Lecturer A/2 – Full‑time equivalent salary range: $5,507 – $6,677 per month.
• Lecturer B/3 – Full‑time equivalent salary range: $6,221 – $13,224 per month.
• Lecturer C/4 – Full‑time equivalent salary range: $6,825 – $14,523 per month.
• Lecturer D/5 – Full‑time equivalent salary range: $8,593 – $15,211 per month.

The anticipated monthly hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Most new faculty lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank.

Department/Division School

The English Department at California State University, Los Angeles cultivates students’ imaginations and critical skills through the intensive study of literature and language. It offers programs leading to Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees, and provides courses that build on traditional British and American literary history while encouraging exploration of literary theory, world literatures, transnational critical paradigms, children’s literature, creative writing, rhetoric and composition, interdisciplinary cultural analysis, and the history and structure of the English language. The department equips students to view literature and language as personally enriching and publicly meaningful within their own communities, fostering mastery of literary traditions and the development of new knowledge locally and globally.
