Job Description

Work under the immediate guidance and direction of a licensed registered nurse to maintain routine clinic records, provide minor first aid care, and conduct health screenings.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED
• Certification as a nurse aide, medical assistant or EMT preferred
• Hold or pursue certification in basic first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Knowledge of basic first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
• Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
• Ability to use software to develop databases and do word processing
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Experience

One (1) year experience in a health-related position and experience working with school-age children.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Health Services

• Work under the direct and indirect guidance and direction of a licensed registered nurse.
• Maintain the clinic in the absence of the nurse if no sub‑nurse is available; contact lead nurse or buddy school nurse when unclear about any medical issue.
• Provide basic first aid and care for minor injuries and illnesses according to a detailed protocol established by the school nurse (RN) or medical advisor.
• Administer medication to students in accordance with board policy and district procedures; maintain an accurate log of medications dispensed.
• Perform procedures such as tube feedings and catheterizations after training by a Registered Nurse.
• Assist with screening programs; take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure) and document results as required by district, state, and federal regulations; communicate findings to supervising school health staff.
• Operate clinic equipment (blood pressure monitor, audiometer, glucometer, AED, Titmus machine, and other medical equipment).
• Escort students to and from the health room and assist students with disabilities as necessary.
• Assist in keeping the clinic clean and sanitary and engaging for students, parents, and the school community (e.g., bulletin boards, educational displays).
• Contact parents of students needing pickup from school according to established protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN).
• Contact emergency medical services (EMS) according to established protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN).

Safety

• Maintain an efficient and safe clinic by following infection control procedures directed by the school nurse (RN). Use Universal Precautions when cleaning bodily spills and providing wound care.
• Prepare, compile, maintain, and file all correspondence, reports, records, and other documents required, including accurate and confidential student health records.
• Maintain a daily log of health‑office activities, including reportable accidents, communicable disease data, and referrals to the school nurse (RN).
• Maintain clinic supply inventory and request supplies as needed.

Compliance

• Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rules, State Board of Education rules, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.

Other

• Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA guidelines.
• Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet current and future needs of Alief.
• Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Supervise students as assigned (duty station, clinic waiting area).

Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Instructional Paraprofessional Personnel.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment such as blood pressure monitor, audiometer, glucometer, AED, Titmus machine, suction machine; special‑needs adaptive equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals.

Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.

Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension.

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more), positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non‑ambulatory students.

Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases.

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress.

2025‑2026 Salary Range: Min. $22,901 Mid. $26,756 Max. $30,610 (Based on prior experience).

Salary is based on 190 days. If working less than 190 days, the salary will be less.
