SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
Position Overview

The district seeks a dedicated Special Education Teacher to serve in various roles including Highly Supported Life Skills, High Intensity Social Emotional Learning, Preschool, Early Intervention, Voice Program, Visually Impaired, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and Itinerant Special Ed. Teacher. The teacher will be assigned to specific school(s) and report to the Principal or Principal Designee.

Position Summary

The teacher is responsible for effective instruction based on district curriculum and assessment practices, working across diverse elementary and secondary settings to support student safety, engagement, and individualized learning plans.

Community Engagement

The district values diversity; candidates should have experience working with culturally diverse families and communities, demonstrating a commitment to community engagement and communication.

Supervision and Control

The teacher works independently under supervision of a school administrator and may receive additional guidance from district special education staff. Work is governed by professional standards, policies, and state regulations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Plan instruction based on individual student needs, using data and district-approved assessments; develop and implement IEP and 504 accommodations.
  2. Collaborate with colleagues and multidisciplinary teams to enhance teaching practices and address student needs.
  3. Design and deliver lessons aligned with curriculum, using research-based strategies and integrating technology.
  4. Maintain accurate grading and communicate progress effectively with students and parents.
  5. Create a positive classroom environment with effective behavior management.
  6. Participate in school meetings and contribute to school improvement efforts.
  7. Monitor student well-being and intervene when students are at risk, maintaining student safety and positive behavior.
  8. Engage in professional reflection and growth planning annually.
  9. Adhere to board policies and stay updated on policy changes.
  10. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience with assessment tools like Woodcock-Johnson; understanding of IFSP and IDEA Part C for Early Intervention.
  • Endorsed in Early Childhood Education; successful teaching experience in special education; valid Washington certification.
  • Knowledge of IDEA and 504; strong communication skills; commitment to collaboration.
  • Classroom management skills; proficiency with assessment and instructional techniques; culturally responsive teaching.
  • Ability to utilize technology effectively; ongoing professional development.
Specialized Program Qualifications

VOICE Program: Conduct vocational assessments, implement academic and social programs, coordinate community work, and collaborate with adult providers.

Early Intervention: Participate in transition activities, develop and monitor IFSP, and support families.

Visually Impaired: Teach Braille, orientation and mobility, and support visual and functional assessments.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Assess sign language needs, teach sign language, and coordinate support schedules.

Itinerant Teacher: Manage caseloads, provide in-home/remote instruction, and coordinate transitions and curricula.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bilingual skills; experience in diverse settings; team teaching experience; relevant grade/content experience.
Physical and Environmental Requirements

Must meet physical demands including lifting up to 50+ pounds, working in various environments, and handling potential exposure to infectious materials and student behaviors.
