Position Overview
The Secondary MS Teacher – Language Arts is responsible for creating a flexible classroom environment that fosters learning and personal growth. The teacher will establish effective rapport with students, motivate them to develop essential skills, and build positive relationships with parents and staff.
Essential Duties
- Teach language arts using the curriculum adopted by the Oklahoma State Department of Education and Oklahoma City’s Board of Education.
- Instruct students in citizenship and core subject matter as per state law and district policies.
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and provide individualized and small group instruction tailored to student needs.
- Implement lesson plans effectively to maximize instructional time.
- Use fair grading practices based on clear criteria.
- Maintain classroom standards for behavior to ensure a conducive learning environment, treating students with respect and dignity.
- Assess student academic and social progress, keep records, and prepare reports.
- Communicate regularly with parents about student progress and school programs.
- Interact professionally with students, staff, and parents.
- Identify student needs and collaborate with colleagues to address health, attitude, and learning issues.
- Create a safe, orderly, and engaging classroom climate.
- Participate in school improvement initiatives and ongoing professional development.
- Supervise students during out-of-class activities (e.g., cafeteria, field trips, playground).
- Perform other duties as assigned, including potential work at alternative sites during health crises or disruptions.
Qualifications
Must have:
- Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.
- Oklahoma Teaching Certification in Secondary Education or approved alternative certification in relevant subjects (e.g., Middle/Junior High School Language Arts, English, Elementary Education).
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Manual dexterity for writing and computer tasks.
- Visual acuity for reading and interpreting materials.
- Normal hearing and clear speech for communication.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and prolonged sitting.
- Flexibility to work outside normal hours when necessary.
Work Environment
Work will primarily be performed in a well-lit, climate-controlled environment.
