Job description

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Direct the operation of the school library/media center. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing,and using information to solve problems. Serve as a teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center is involved in instructional

programs of the school.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification :

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university (for individuals certified after January 23, 2001)

Valid Texas school librarian certificate or endorsement

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of library and information sciences

Strong knowledge of instructional strategies and classroom management

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of current digital devices and applications available for use in an instructional setting.

Work Conditions

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard library equipment including imaging equipment; standard instruction equipment

Posture: Regular sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of a mouse; regular overhead reaching; climbing

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting and carrying (15–45 pounds)

Environment: Attend district level meetings and trainings; may split campuses

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruption; maintain emotional control under stress

Regular attendance is an essential function

Experience:

Two years' successful classroom teaching experience, as evidenced by performance evaluations,in a public or accredited private school.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Curriculum Integration:

  • Assure the school library is an integral part of the school curriculum.
  • Encourage and provide opportunities for collaborative planning and teaching including ways to improve STAAR-related performance of all students on the campus.
  • Offer education, training and guidance to students and staff in planning for the use and integration of technology in the curriculum.
  • Work with individuals and groups as determined by student and teacher need to provide relevant and meaningful instruction based on multiple resources.
  • Resources :

  • Develop and maintain a balanced, up-to-date collection of materials based on curriculum and user needs.
  • Select material according to the district adopted board-approved policies.
  • Management:

  • Organize, supervise, and evaluate programs to facilitate student and staff accessibility.
  • Compile budget and cost estimates based on program needs.
  • Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, and board approved policies in the library services area.
  • Create an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity levels and interests of students.
  • Public Relations:

  • Join with teachers and others to plan and implement meaningful experiences that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning.
  • Seek collaborative library and information technology initiatives, such as partnerships with the Education Service Center, school, public and academic libraries, and technology consortia.
  • Inform the school and school community about library programs, resources and services.
  • Professional Responsibilities :

  • Participate in professional growth and staff development and is willing to collaborate with colleagues and other professionals for continuous growth and development.
  • Provide information/instructional technology in-service opportunities that relate to the library, as needed for school personnel.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Abide by State and Federal laws, District policies, campus expectations and Texas Educator Code of Ethics.
  • Perform such other tasks & assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: May supervise clerical aide(s), student aide(s), and volunteers.
