Job description

PURPOSE OF JOB: Provide instruction, leadership, and supervision to middle school students participating in the sports program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conduct practices emphasizing teamwork, skill development, learning rules and strategies, and student-athlete improvement.
  2. Engage in academic monitoring with teachers, counselors, and other support staff. Ensure student-athletes attend required study hall.
  3. Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices and contests, including in locker rooms, on buses, and at all other times. Be punctual for practices and games and remain until all student-athletes have left.
  4. Take responsibility for the care of equipment and inventory. Inspect athletic equipment and facilities, verify inventory, and submit documentation to the Athletic Director/Principal.
  5. Conduct oneself ethically during practices and contests, exemplifying high standards of sportsmanship. Lead by example to model desired behavior.
  6. Complete all required paperwork, including rosters, physicals, insurance forms, and parent consent forms.
  7. Collaborate with the Principal to develop a solid program.
  8. Pursue professional growth through clinics and publications.
  9. Manage all aspects of the program, including player development, fundraising, promotion, and supervision of assistant coaches.
  10. Assume full responsibility for all facets of the program.
  11. Promote student-athletes' academic and athletic accomplishments.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Student-Athletes and Assistant Coach(s)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possess a four-year college degree and be contracted by the KCMSD Board of Education as a full or part-time teacher, or have 1-3 years of coaching experience.
  2. Knowledge of the specific sport, including philosophy and coaching methods.
  3. Successfully complete the MSHSAA/NFHS Coaching Principles Course and Sports First Aid Courses.
  4. Strong commitment to the student-athlete concept and working knowledge of collegiate eligibility regulations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Employment as a teacher or administrator in the school where applying for the coaching position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical requirements include sitting, standing, walking, speaking, hearing, using hands and fingers, reaching, bending, stooping, and lifting objects of at least 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.
