Starting Date: Immediately

Qualifications

• Graduate from high school.
• Meeting the provisions of “No Child Left Behind”: associate’s degree, 48 semester hours of college credit, or a successful series of WorkKeys assessments with 96 contact hours of staff development.
• At least eighteen (18) years old with six (6) months of driving experience.
• Possess or be willing to obtain a current North Carolina commercial driver’s license with proper endorsements and a current bus driver’s pocket card.
• Pass DOT drug and alcohol testing.
• Never convicted of a DWI offense.

Essential Job Functions

• Classroom Assistance
  • Assist the teacher with duties and student needs under general supervision.
  • Provide one‑on‑one academic and behavioral support and lead small group activities.
  • Obtain and maintain basic first aid and CPR certification.
  • Apply strategies for adapting instruction and equipment for children with special needs, and maintain confidentiality and district regulations.
  • Support instructional execution and evaluate effectiveness.
  • Monitor student safety and well‑being, encourage self‑esteem and independence.
  • Enforce classroom discipline, assist with crisis prevention, and restrain students when required.
  • Maintain standardized records of student progress.
  • Aid with daily living skills (feeding, toileting, diapering, lifting, wheelchair assistance, etc.).
  • Assist with therapeutic rehabilitation, scheduling therapy, medication administration, and special diets.
  • Incorporate fine‑motor, sensory, self‑help, social, and computer skills into activities.
  • Perform general housekeeping: set up equipment each morning, put away items, wash mats and toys, and perform minor repairs.
  • Follow safety protocols for blood‑borne pathogens, wearing personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Participate in staff development as directed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Bus Driving
  • Maintain driving proficiency and complete all transportation reports.
  • Ensure safety and care of students boarding, riding, and disembarking.
  • Maintain a high standard of student conduct at all times.
  • Discharge students only at authorized school or bus stop locations and transport only authorized students.
  • Report safety rule infractions to the principal or designee.
  • Obey all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the bus.
  • Operate the bus on assigned routes and schedules, attending bus safety meetings.
  • Inform Transportation Specialist or TIMS Manager of any route changes due to student additions or deletions.
  • Secure the bus before leaving at the end of a run and report any mechanical defects.
  • Maintain positive relations with parents/guardians and school personnel.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

NOTE: All medically related procedures will be performed under the training and supervision of the school nurse (R.N.).

Physical and Cognitive Requirements

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below apply to this classification within the Exceptional Children Program. Work is considered medium physical effort, requiring up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
