    Summary: To perform routine maintenance service, repairs, wash, tire repair, overhaul and maintain diesel and gasoline fuel motors used to operate school buses, vehicles, trucks and other equipment.

    Mechanic I Responsibilities: This is the entry-level class in the Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Mechanic II by the performance of more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series including assisting in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of school buses and motor vehicles, including electric, diesel and gasoline industrial vehicles. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

    Qualification Requirements for Mechanic I:
    Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade (High School Diploma required).
    Licensure: Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid New Mexico driver's license.

    Mechanic II Responsibilities: This is the full journey level class within the Mechanic series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Mechanic I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including the repairing and maintenance of electric, diesel and gasoline industrial vehicles. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level upon receiving the appropriate license and certificate, or when filled from the outside, have prior experience and appropriate licensure and certificate.

    Qualification Requirements for Mechanic II: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in a related field; Two years of industrial automotive repair and maintenance experience including public contact is desirable; Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid Diesel Mechanic Certificate.

    Working Conditions:

    Environmental Conditions: Office, shop and school environment; exposure to cleaning and/or sterilization chemicals and airborne particles and vibration; exposure to loud noise and frequently works in outside weather conditions.

    Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate to extremely heavy carrying, lifting, and pushing; reaching, climbing in high, precarious places, crawling, sitting, kneeling, standing and walking for extended periods of time; operation of motor vehicles; and subject to random drug testing.
