PART TIME LIFEGUARD / SWIM INSTRUCTOR
JOB DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO: Lead Aquatics Facility Manager
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Until Filled
LENGTH OF WORK YEAR: As Needed Basis
DATE REVISED: 05/09/2022
WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Non-Exempt
HOURLY RANGE: $12.75 - $17.25 (Minimum - Maximum)

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Under supervision, ensures the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. Also provides skill-based swim and water safety instruction.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  1. Minimum 17 years old, college students preferred
  2. Certificates preferred or able to acquire certification within 30 days of employment (on the job training for certification will be provided):
    • Lifeguard Certification
    • First Aid
    • CPR & AED

Experience:

  1. Must be an experienced swimmer, preferred lifeguard/swim instructor experience

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  1. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  2. Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  3. Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures.
  4. Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  5. Ability to use hand tools or machines specific to pool maintenance work.
  6. Ability to communicate and demonstrate basic swimming strokes and techniques.
  7. Knowledge and ability to evaluate water conditions at aquatics facilities to determine any potential dangers or hazards.
  8. Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written.
  9. Proficient in interacting with people of various ages from diverse backgrounds.
  10. Available to work shifts.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Monitors swimming activities at the aquatics facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.
  2. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  3. Provides skill-based swim and water safety instruction for varying ages.
  4. Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  5. Performs various maintenance duties to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  6. Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.
  7. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environment Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress and emotional situations. Irregular hours; outdoor and in the pool work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather. Physical demonstrations of skills; standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting are expected.
