Purpose of Role

Under general supervision, this position plans and directs the cleaning activities for all assigned staff for campus buildings. Position provides supervision for and manages all assigned staff. Position estimates work times for assigned staff. Position also has oversight responsibility for contracted cleaning personnel. As a working lead, this position also performs a variety of cleaning duties to maintain cleanliness of assigned areas. In addition to routine cleaning, general portering duties and deep cleaning of student residential areas will be required. As such, lead must be able to perform all tasks in 1st Shift Maintenance Worker - Cleaner/Housekeeping position job description.

About This Opportunity

Joining our Facility team, the 1st Shift Working Lead Cleaner/Housekeeping will be responsible for the following:

  • Schedule, supervise and inspect work performed by assigned staff and contractors to ensure work is completed to university standards in a timely manner.
  • Monitor progress of daily operations to ensure a productive shift for staff.
  • Help determine necessary time required to perform tasks based on experience and investigation.
  • Estimate materials and supplies needed to perform work and requisition same.
  • Act as liaison between Daemen and cleaning supplies vendor.
  • Make regular inspections of buildings and cleaning equipment to identify conditions that require repair and issue work orders for needed repairs.
  • Personally perform a variety of cleaning and custodial tasks: this is a working supervisor position. Emergency cleanups may include bloodborne pathogens.
  • Considered essential personnel/responder - which means that this position reports to work when the University is closed or in emergency situations unless otherwise determined by supervisor.
  • Order supplies for Fall residence preparation (bed covers, oven pans, etc.).
  • Purchase and maintain stock for Daemen House supplies.
  • Assist with onboarding process for new cleaning staff.
  • Coordinate special cleaning projects as needed.
  • Train second and third shift cleaners as needed.
  • Carry assigned communication device at all times.
  • Monitor team performance and address quality issues.
  • Manage key/card access and security protocols for staff and buildings.
  • Perform cleaning inspections regularly.
  • Follow all health and safety regulations and protocols.
  • Assist with room and event setups as needed.
  • Work collaboratively and professionally with all coworkers and members of the campus community.
  • Supervise and schedule all coverage, planned time off and work.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.) both during and after employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  • Direct the activities of cleaning staff to include payroll approval, scheduling, employee appraisals, training and monitoring work assignments.
  • Monitor incoming maintenance request tickets for cleaning tasks and determine if task is able to be completed by immediate staff or if contractors are required.
  • Meet with contractors and vendors requesting quotes for needed repairs/equipment replacement, developing and documenting scope of work required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • 6 AM - 2:30 PM

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to read and comprehend various forms, documentation, files, and information in the department.
  • Strong supervisory, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of computers as related to facilities systems, emailing and payroll.
  • Ability to lay out and inspect the work of cleaners and provide clear direction.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.
  • Strong organizational and scheduling skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Reliability and punctuality.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow cleaning procedures and safety protocols.
  • Knowledge of and experience with various cleaning machines, equipment and products.
  • Self motivated as well as ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to evaluate and resolve day-to-day problems pertaining to cleaning of the physical facilities and personnel issues.
  • Normal work week is forty (40) hours Monday-Friday, but the ability to work extended hours and weekends to respond to emergencies and meet deadlines is required.
  • Ability to drive a university vehicle for university business on a regular basis as approved by university insurance.

Physical Requirements

The functions of the position are usually performed standing but may require some amount of time sitting. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, stretching, pushing, crouching, heavy lifting (ability to lift and carry up to thirty pounds on a regular basis and up to sixty pounds on an occasional basis), climbing ladders, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. Ability to stand for long lengths of time. Under special circumstances, protective equipment and garb may be required. Tasks involving custodial work involve extensive wrist and hand movement. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of five (5) years' cleaning/custodial experience. Supervisory experience preferred.
  • A valid New York State driver's license required that satisfies both University and insurance company underwriting rules and regulations for driving a motor vehicle.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to follow department Uniform Policy.

Total Compensation

Daemen University offers a robust total compensation package that includes:

  • Health insurance with an option of two plans: an HSA plan with the deductible funded by employer HSA contributions, or a copay plan.
