POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Position Title: 1st Shift QA (NSIS) Supervisor

Department: Quality Assurance

Location: Ottumwa, IA

Salary Class: Exempt

Division: Pork

Purpose & Scope: Reports directly to the QA Superintendent and is responsible for supervising Food Safety and Quality (FSQA) personnel, overseeing quality and food safety aspects of production, and achieving safety, food safety, and quality goals set by management.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Meet and exceed quality and food safety goals by leveraging engineering skills.
  2. Coordinate FSQA team activities for implementation of HACCP, SSOP, and other safety programs.
  3. Investigate quality and safety processes, suggest improvements.
  4. Promote continuous process improvement and team ownership.
  5. Conduct microbial R&D testing.
  6. Minimize customer claims through engineering controls.
  7. Monitor product and procedures to meet or surpass specifications, and implement corrective actions.
  8. Supervise sanitation processes, verifying cleanliness of equipment and facilities daily.
  9. Identify hazards and implement safety solutions to improve employee safety.
  10. Manage labor within budget constraints.
  11. Reduce costs by eliminating foreign material.
  12. Complete daily production plans, schedule and assign tasks, monitor progress, and report results.
  13. Manage employee time cards and vacation requests for accurate payroll.
  14. Enhance employee retention and maintain good relationships with production, USDA, and staff.
  15. Ensure compliance with food safety, HR, and safety policies.
  16. Resolve product and employee issues promptly.
  17. Communicate with USDA inspectors regarding product and safety issues.
  18. Ensure HACCP compliance for all products.
  19. Maintain shelf-life, product specifications, leaker testing, and other standards.
  20. Lead, motivate, and evaluate QA employees; conduct interviews and hiring.
  21. Sample finished products and raw materials for bacteria testing.
  22. Ensure proper procedures, safety, and cleanliness of production staff.
  23. Complete all QA duties and test new equipment for quality.
  24. Lead product shows and conference calls in absence of the superintendent.
  25. Manage cold chain temperature logging.
  26. Maintain good attendance (less than 3 points for internal candidates).

Working Conditions:

  • Production environment with exposure to chemicals, machinery, knives.
  • Slippery floors, extreme temperatures, loud noises.
  • High interaction with other departments and employees.
  • Over 40 hours/week, including weekends.

Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Meat Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or related field.

Experience:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in QA, production, and supervisory roles.
