Job Details

Purpose: Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 1st Class Pipe Fitter to support 2nd shift operations (3:30PM - 12:00AM) in Norfolk, VA.

Job Description
  • Perform layout, fabrication, installation, testing, and repair of pipe systems.
  • Install simple systems without blueprints.
  • Create piping system targets by referencing existing samples of old piping systems.
  • Construct mock-ups for off-site prefabrication, read blueprints, fabricate stands and jigs, and create targets.
  • Construct piping systems within required tolerances.
  • Manage job progress from material list to completion.
  • Fit pipe and prepare joints for welding according to system requirements.
  • Use blueprints and make fabrication sketches for team use.
  • Determine and apply joint and system tolerances.
  • Set up and operate burning torches.
  • Fabricate and design pipe hangers.
  • Test piping systems with air and water.
  • Perform tack welding, silver brazing, soft soldering, and burning.
  • Work with various pipe materials and sizes.
  • Calculate take-ups for welds and joints.
  • Lay out piping systems.
  • Conduct local air, compressed air, and hydrostatic tests.
  • Operate pipe bending machines.
  • Evaluate joint allowances and ensure tolerances.
  • Work with different types of joints and materials.
  • Train subordinates and supervise as senior mechanic.
  • Follow industry codes, specifications, and regulations.
  • Work independently and follow instructions.
Qualifications
  • At least 7 years of shipboard pipefitting experience.
  • Proficiency with hand tools and instruments like pipe benders, bandsaws, grinders, drill presses, pipe threaders.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Training in NAVSEA Standard Items applicable to pipefitting, with advanced understanding of bevels, backing rings, inserts, open roots, saddles, miters, and tolerances.
  • Ability to read blueprints, sketches, and templates.
  • Understanding of units of measure, including fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to measure with scales and tape measures.
  • Reliable attendance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Technical training preferred.
  • DBIDS eligibility preferred.
  • Mechanical or Outside Machinist experience highly preferred.
Additional Requirements
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Minimal travel, 10% or less.
  • Physical ability to lift at least 20 lbs., work in extreme conditions, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to operate trucks, forklifts, and man-lifts.
  • Frequent standing, walking, use of hands, and exposure to noise, heat, humidity, and industrial conditions.
  • Use of protective equipment when welding or working with molten metal.
