Job description

Job Title: 1st Class Outside Machinist

Location: Larose, LA

Position Overview: A 1st Class Outside Machinist is a skilled tradesperson specializing in the assembly, installation, and maintenance of complex mechanical systems typically found in marine environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Determine methods of fabrication, assembly, and installation of various machinery and equipment.
  2. Install ship machinery such as propelling machinery and auxiliary motors using blueprints and hand tools.
  3. Lay out passage holes on bulkheads, decks, and other surfaces for connections.
  4. Perform necessary machine work including dismantling, repairing, and reassembling of light and heavy machinery.
  5. Obtain accurate measurements and position equipment to precise tolerances.
  6. Drill and secure the installed equipment into place.
  7. Clean up and maintain the assigned work area.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of marine experience within a similar position.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of system start-up procedures and machinery plant operations.
  • Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills for collaboration with team members and departments.
  • Knowledge of air controls and tubing bending.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical publications.
  • Good knowledge of system start-up procedures, propulsion system alignment, and machinery plants.
  • Familiarity with all aspects of marine construction from design to operational testing.
  • Knowledge of applicable commercial and military standards and specifications.
  • Proficiency in using tools and equipment such as magnetic base drills, portable machining equipment, chain falls, jacks, etc.
  • Experience or background in welding.
