Position Summary

As a Crane Operator at Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc., you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of cranes within the shipyard, including lifting, moving, and positioning heavy materials and equipment. This role requires advanced knowledge of crane operations, specifically friction cranes, a strong focus on safety, and the ability to work in coordination with other trades and project teams.

Location & Schedule

The position is located onsite in Norfolk, VA, with often extended hours and flexible scheduling to support production/operations. Limited travel may be required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Operate various types of cranes, including mobile, overhead, friction, and tower cranes, to lift, move, and position heavy materials and equipment within the shipyard and aboard vessels.
  2. Assess load weights and ensure they are within the crane’s capacity. Safely rig loads using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  3. Coordinate with riggers, signalpersons, and other crew members to ensure safe crane operations.
  4. Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on crane equipment.
  5. Evaluate work sites for safe crane setup, considering ground conditions, load stability, and hazards.
  6. Maintain records of crane operations, including lift plans, maintenance logs, and inspections.
  7. Address issues during crane operations to ensure safety and efficiency.
  8. Implement emergency procedures during safety incidents.
  9. Collaborate with other trades and departments to meet project timelines.
  10. Prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  11. Mentor and support other crew members as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least 7 years of crane operation experience, specifically with friction cranes, preferably in a marine or shipyard environment, or a relevant apprenticeship program.
  • Expertise in crane operation, load handling, rigging, safety protocols, and maintenance.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials, work at heights, and in confined spaces.
  • Relevant certifications in crane operation.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications
  • Technical training and certifications in rigging or related fields are preferred.
Security & Travel
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain DBIDS preferred.
  • Minimal travel required (10% or less).
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment (minimum 20 lbs).
  • Work in extreme temperatures, confined spaces, and aboard ships, including climbing ladders and working in industrial conditions.
  • Operate trucks, forklifts, and man-lifts.
  • Perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, climbing, and working in adverse conditions.
  • Use protective gear and equipment as required.
