Position Summary:

Colonna's Shipyard is seeking a 1st Class Crane Operator to support operations on 2nd Shift at our Shipyard in Norfolk, VA. As a Crane Operator, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of cranes, including lifting, moving, and positioning heavy materials and equipment. This role requires advanced knowledge of crane operations, specifically friction cranes, a strong focus on safety, and coordination with other trades and project teams.

Shift Details:

This position supports 2nd shift operations (3:30PM - 12:00AM).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Operate various types of cranes, including mobile, overhead, friction, and tower cranes, to lift, move, and position heavy materials and equipment within the shipyard and aboard vessels.
  • Assess load weights and ensure they are within crane capacity; rig loads safely using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Coordinate with riggers, signalpersons, and other crew members during crane operations.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on crane equipment.
  • Evaluate work sites to determine the safest crane setup, considering ground conditions, load stability, and hazards.
  • Maintain records of crane operations, including lift plans, maintenance logs, and inspection reports, ensuring safety compliance.
  • Address issues during crane operations, making adjustments for safety and efficiency.
  • Implement emergency procedures if needed, ensuring safety of personnel and materials.
  • Collaborate with other trades and departments to complete projects on time.
  • Prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Mentor and support team members as needed.
Required Qualifications:
  • At least 7 years of crane operation experience, particularly with friction cranes, preferably in marine or shipyard settings, or graduation from a relevant apprenticeship program.
  • Expertise in crane operation, load handling, rigging, safety protocols, and crane maintenance.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials, work at heights, and in confined spaces.
  • Relevant certifications in crane operation are mandatory.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
  • Technical training and certifications in rigging or related fields are highly preferred.
Security & Travel Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain DBIDS is preferred.
  • Minimal travel required, 10% or less.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and transport heavy equipment (at least 20 lbs).
  • Work in extreme temperatures, confined spaces, aboard ships, and in industrial environments.
  • Operate trucks, forklifts, and man-lifts.
  • Work involves standing, walking, climbing, and other physical activities, often in challenging conditions.
