Duties

  • You will serve on a hopper dredge. The dredge is characterized (electrically) by approximately 250 separate units ranging from fractional HP to 4000 HP with the majority carrying from 240 to 720 volts. You will:
  • Assume responsibility for the operation and efficiency of the dredges electrical systems and components when they are absent.
  • Follow the plans and instructions laid out by an Engineer while he was on board but is responsible for coping with unanticipated problems or emergency situations on their own.
  • Make scheduled and special operational checks of equipment. Observes gauges, listens, notes unusual conditions (heating, oil or grease loss, loose fittings, broken or inoperative units, etc.) and makes repairs or adjustments as required.
  • Make periodic or special preventative maintenance checks of units.
  • Test, dismantle, observe, replace scheduled or work elements, lubricate, pack, repair, etc., as indicated.
  • Report actions taken, need for further attention, and unusual results.
  • Install replacement or new equipment (floodlights, signals, fixtures, etc).
  • Repair or participate in the repair of any electrical unit on board (motors, pumps, generators, control panels, special equipment, etc.).
  • Itemize materials and parts used.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be willing to serve a one-year probationary period, if applicable.
  • Position requires a pre-employment physical, then annually thereafter
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Travel may be required up to 5% of the time.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with Electrician Endorsement.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Must be willing to take and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and must be willing and able to pass random drug and alcohol tests thereafter.

Basic Requirement For Position

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a First Assistant Electrician without more than normal supervision. Your resume must demonstrate your ability to perform common electrician duties such as repair electrical equipment, apply drawings, performs tests, use hand tools, and observe gauges. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Licensing/Certification (Selective Placement Factor): In addition to meeting the experience requirement of this position, applicants must:

  • Must possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with Electrician Endorsement.
  • Must possess a valid Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC).

Physical Effort

Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the parts of the system worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Duties require long periods of time standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools and equipment, and parts that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in closed areas with some work outside. Considerable time is spent in or adjacent to the engine room area with its attendant noise, heat, and fumes. Works in very close places and in awkward position. Subject to the usual electrical hazards involving shock, strain, burns, cuts, falls from ladders, and fumes and heat while working in confined quarters.

Working On The Hopper Dredge McFarland

  • The McFarland is in a ready reserve status and operates on the Delaware River 70 days per year. The remainder of the year is spent on performing maintenance or periods at the shipyard. The ship may also be called out to perform emergency dredging along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts.
  • Regular tour of duty is 15 consecutive work days, followed by 13 days off.
  • Residence on board the dredge during the work period is a necessary condition of employment.
  • While the dredge is operating, subsistence and quarters are provided free of charge.
  • Transportation to and from the dredge is at the employee's expense.
  • When the dredge is operating in the Delaware River, access to and from Philadelphia International Airport is minutes from the Ships Home Dock which is located at the Fort Mifflin Project Office.
  • Access from major roads is also within minutes (I-95 & I-76).
  • Parking is provided at the Fort Mifflin field office for all Crew Members.
