General Responsibilities
Reporting to the Nurse Supervisor, the Public Health Nurse is responsible for promoting the physical and emotional health of the school population through direct care, education, guidance, and consultation. This position is affiliated with the Fairfield Public Nurses Union.
- Evaluate the health and development status of pupils according to state, local, and agency policies via assessment screening.
- Report positive findings to parents and coordinate the referral and follow-up process.
- Counsel, develop, and implement plans with pupils, parents, and school personnel to address health problems affecting teaching or learning.
- Promote preventive health measures.
- Implement communicable disease control measures, including surveillance, monitoring, and notification.
- Serve as a health consultant to school personnel.
- Participate in individual school’s planning and placement teams.
- Conduct classroom teaching or provide in-service programs for teachers in relevant subject areas.
- Provide first aid for accidents and illnesses.
- Assess environmental health factors and establish emergency care plans to protect health and safety.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date health records.
- Administer medications according to state regulations, physician’s orders, and agency policies.
- Perform special procedures, e.g., intermittent catheterization, as per physician’s orders.
- Administer immunizations against preventable diseases.
- Assist physicians with health assessments conducted in school as needed.
- Participate in program development for specific issues at individual schools.
- Arrange for additional health services through school or community resources as necessary.
- Provide on-site orientation for new school nurses to the school health program.
- Conduct home visits related to school issues.
- Educate the school community about local health facilities and systems.
- Assist in orienting new staff to the school health program.
- Supervise university students providing situational experiences and supervision as needed.
- If assigned to schools with health aides, supervise these aides, including orientation, ongoing guidance, and performance evaluations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse with a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or a Diploma/Associate Degree with at least 15 academic credits in required areas.
- At least one (1) year of nursing experience within the last five (5) years.
Schedule
- Monday – Friday, hours dependent upon assignment.
