Job Description: Middle School Special Education Coordinator

Summary: The Middle School Special Education Coordinator assumes responsibility for special education programming and services at the middle level in coordination with Building Administrators and the Assistant Superintendent for Special Services.

Responsibilities:
  1. Providing direct supervision, support, and guidance to program design, curriculum development, and the provision of special education supports and services.
  2. Designing, implementing, and evaluating professional development needs and opportunities in support of specialized populations (including Crisis Prevention and RTO).
  3. Providing technical assistance to special education teams to support the needs of special education students per federal laws and regulations.
  4. Providing direct support to students, staff, and families to facilitate transfers of students into and out of the middle school special education system from within and outside of the district.
  5. Providing direct leadership and LEA support to IEP teams.
  6. Gathering information and data to support appropriate staffing decisions.
  7. Evaluating staff who support the provision of special education services.
  8. Supervising ESY summer school program.
  9. Facilitating follow-up for ESY services for students who participate in programming.
  10. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications:
  • Appropriate administrative credentials for the State of Illinois.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a certified professional within the field of special education in a public school setting (e.g., special education teacher, psychologist, speech pathologist).
  • Training in or strong understanding of the practices, procedures, legal requirements, and theoretical frameworks of special education and response-to-intervention.
  • Experience with supervision and evaluation of staff is preferred.
  • Experience working with middle-level learners is preferred.
