How You Will Contribute
- Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain inspection vehicles and inspection instruments.
- Inspection Data and Reports: Prepare inspection reports, provide general condition and element ratings and make recommendations for deficiencies. Review and approve inspection reports prepared by other inspectors.
- Inspection Schedules: Assist supervisor or manager with planning and scheduling bridge and structure inspections.
- Inspections: Perform visual and tactile safety inspection of bridges and highway structures to discover damage, deterioration, and defects that would impair the life, serviceability, and safety of a structure. Perform scheduled routine inspections and specialized inspections such as scour critical inspections, final inspections of new structures, structures damaged by floods and vehicular collision, and inspections of fatigue-prone details. May serve as a Team Leader on demand as incumbent meets minimum qualifications as defined by the NBIS.
- Inventory: Update inventory records and maintain inspection files, forms, reports and maps of assigned areas.
- Job Safety: Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Ensure workplace safety by identifying workplace hazards and making suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA, etc.). Ensure equipment is used properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
- Training: Provide training and guidance to other inspectors in field data collection methods and inspection reporting.

- Knowledge of NBIS, federal and VDOT requirements related to structures and safety inspections.
- Knowledge of and skill in the application of engineering math.
- Knowledge of bridge maintenance, repair and rehabilitation.
- Knowledge of routine to specialized bridge and structure inspection methods and NBIS, as well as structure inventory and assessment database systems.
- Knowledge of the types, function and use of structural components.
- Skill in reading and interpreting bridge and structure plans.
- Skill in rendering drawings and sketches using computer applications.
- Skill in the use of bridge inspection instruments and access equipment.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include MS Office and database applications related to safety inspections.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to include preparing detailed technical reports and sketches of bridges and structures, as well as apply engineering math.
- Ability to physically perform hands-on inspections of bridges and structures, work at heights, work over or in water, in confined spaces, in proximity to moving traffic and in inclement weather.
- Ability to use and access required equipment.
- Knowledge of bridge inspection methods and procedures, routine bridge maintenance and repair procedures, deterioration characteristics of bridge materials and common bridge types and nomenclature.
- Must meet minimum qualifications for a Team Leader as defined by the NBIS.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include database systems, as well as bridge inspection instruments.
- Valid driver's license.
Additional Considerations
- A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Engineering Technology or related field desired.
- Completion of FHWA approved training course in the inspection of Nonredundant Steel Tension Members (NSTM).
- Experience in bridge construction, maintenance or repair.
- Experience performing safety inspections on routine to specialized bridges and structures.
- Experience preparing and reviewing inspection reports, coding and updating structure inventories, and updating and maintaining inspection files and forms.
- Experience preparing, approving and signing safety inspection reports.
- Proficient in the use of MS Office products and CAD.
