Job Duties
- Plan, direct, and manage daily transportation services operations to ensure efficient services. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and codes.
- Develop, review, and administer Transportation Services Department policies and procedures.
- Develop annual department goals and objectives.
- Create long-term transportation plans, including non-vehicle and alternative vehicle components.
- Implement programs to promote alternative transportation methods and work habit modifications to reduce campus vehicular parking.
- Develop and execute traffic safety education and enforcement initiatives, collaborating with campus planners to promote safe vehicle use on and around campus.
- Manage the Transportation Services annual auxiliary-based operating budget according to university financial policies.
- Monitor monthly department revenue and expenses, including receivables, and forecast year-end financials quarterly, with appropriate reporting and reconciliation.
- Maintain relevant contracts related to Transportation Services.
- Represent and serve on committees, at public events, and within professional organizations.
- Engage in problem-solving, presentations, focus groups, and information sharing with campus and community groups.
- Collaborate with the Chief mechanic.
- Oversee daily motor pool operations, vehicle maintenance, and establish a vehicle replacement schedule.
- Manage shuttle services, whether in-house or via outside vendors.
- Manage part-time drivers, including hiring, scheduling, performance reviews, and personnel decisions.
- Process monthly motor pool recoveries.
Minimum Qualifications
- Supervisory experience in transportation operations.
- Knowledge and ability to operate highway and navigation devices.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with multitasking ability.
- Deep understanding of transportation technologies and industry trends.
- Ability to work effectively with the university community.
- Experience in developing long-term strategies.
- Proficiency in math for load tolerance and mileage calculations.
- Leadership skills to motivate drivers, mechanics, and laborers.
- Understanding of vehicle components, loading equipment, and computers.
- Proven experience as a transportation manager or similar role.
- Knowledge of safety and compliance regulations.
- Leadership and team management skills.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Decision-making under pressure.
- Attention to detail and record-keeping skills.
- Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends as needed.
Additional Considerations
Minimum of six (6) years of progressive supervisory experience in transportation or equivalent. Strong communication, team-building, project management, and analytical skills. Ability to interpret technical procedures and regulations, apply sound planning, analyze complex problems, and develop solutions. Capable of working collaboratively across campus and community, exercising initiative and judgment within policy guidelines. Willingness to be a team player and develop transportation planning alternatives affecting campus planning.
