Job description

As the publisher of Ubuntu, we serve millions of developers building for the cloud, IoT, and data science. Our goal is to make open source easier and more reliable for innovators and enterprises.

We have created a new Developer Relations team to engage directly with open source communities and developer-centric organizations. Our aim is to communicate our vision and products for better open source development experiences and to gather feedback to shape our offerings and priorities.

Position: Developer Relations Engineer

A Developer Relations Engineer is a technical expert, strategist, and communicator with deep empathy for developers. This role combines practical engineering skills with diplomacy across organizational boundaries. The ideal candidate is curious, innovative, and passionate about improving developer tools and experiences, staying current with tech trends, and fostering innovation.

Location: We are building our initial DevRel team across Europe, Middle East, Africa, and the Americas time zones.

Typical Daily Activities
  • Participate in team product meetings, contributing insights from strategy to daily development
  • Engage with developer communities via IRC, social media, forums, meet-ups, and more
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistent approaches and shared goals
  • Assist in solving technical problems faced by users or colleagues
  • Contribute to technical documentation to meet developer needs
  • Create technical articles, presentations, and workshops
  • Identify opportunities for improving the developer experience
  • Present at conferences, meetups, and technical events
Candidate Requirements

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Is a programmer or developer passionate about open-source software
  • Has experience developing and deploying software on Linux
  • Has hands-on experience with Linux software packaging (Snaps, debs, charms, rocks, PIP, containers)
  • Understands current Linux packaging issues and trends
  • Has contributed to open-source communities and documentation
  • Is an engaging speaker and presenter
  • Can work effectively and tactfully with diverse stakeholders
  • Builds trust and relationships
  • Is willing to travel globally twice a year for company and partner events
Additional Skills (Optional)
  • Experience in developer advocacy or community roles
  • Familiarity with Ubuntu and Canonical ecosystem products
