Job Description

We invite applications for the position of Visiting Professor or Visiting Associate Professor in Comparative Religious Studies named in honour of Reverend Yap Kim Hao. This endowed professorship is intended to advance teaching, research, and scholarship in the study of religion, with a particular emphasis on the field of comparative religious studies. The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. This is a three-year appointment with the possibility for renewal. The position is expected to commence in AY 2026-2027.

We seek a scholar who specializes in Christianity and has strong knowledge of other major religions. There is no regional focus although candidates with an interest in Asia/Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, Singapore and/or Vietnam, will be preferred. The disciplinary focus is wide, as we are particularly interested in applicants whose research and teaching are multi- or inter-disciplinary and stretch the field of Asian Studies. We also welcome applicants who have a secondary specialization in one or more of the following fields: inter-faith relations, the global dimensions of religious traditions and movements, religious politics, and new religiosities (especially Protestant Christianities).

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to:

(1) be the Convenor of the Minor in Religious Studies;

(2) teach courses in our undergraduate and graduate programmes in their areas of specialization, and

(3) engage in an active and innovative research agenda.

The standard teaching load is three modules (courses) per academic year, with an expectation that the successful candidate will also advise students.

Remuneration will be internationally competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate may also enjoy research funding, housing benefits, relocation allowance, and other benefits depending on the type and duration of appointment and citizenship.

  • Concise statement of your teaching experience and interests, as well as possible courses you are able to offer to raise the profile of the department (1-2 pages)
  • Concise statement describing your personal qualities and experience in collaborative and leadership roles in academic projects and community engagements (1-2 pages)
  • Evidence of teaching experience (course reviews, sample syllabi, teaching awards)
  • A list of three referees (names, contact details and applicant’s relationship to them; only shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit reference letters
