Job summary

SPH Media Limited’s Berita Harian seeks a versatile Visual Journalist to tell stories through illustrations, graphics, and short-form video. You’ll work with editors to shape visual narratives that appeal to Malay-speaking audiences, identifying angles and driving independent projects.

You will translate complex news into engaging visuals, collaborate across platforms, and push visual storytelling with data-driven approaches and editorial art pieces.

Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in a relevant field.
• Proficiency in design and video tools: Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere Pro), Figma, or equivalents.
• Strong storytelling instincts and an understanding of news values.
• Fluency in Malay and English (spoken and written); Malay fluency essential.
• Solid portfolio showing both visual art and journalistic thinking.
• Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines.
• Self-starter attitude and ability to drive projects independently.
• Experience in journalism, illustration, and motion graphics; newsroom experience advantageous.
• Experience with data visualization or social-first content is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Conceptualise and produce illustrations, infographics, motion graphics and short-form videos.
• Collaborate with journalists to translate complex stories into visuals.
• Create visuals that resonate with Malay-speaking audiences across topics.
• Develop and lead visual-first stories, including explainer videos and social content.
• Stay ahead of visual trends to keep content fresh.
• Ensure visuals are brand-aligned and platform-appropriate (Instagram, TikTok, website).
