Job Description

The coordinator is responsible for the coordination of organ donation. This involves being well-versed with the two legislations: The Medical (Therapy, Education & Research) Act 1972 and The Human Organ Transplant Act 1987 (HOTA), which permits organ donation, and understanding the framework of the different hospitals that facilitate the organ procurement process. The coordinator will be responsible for selecting patients on the National Transplant Register for kidney transplantation and assisting in the administration of the Organ Donor Registry to ensure that data are entered accurately and promptly.

The main objectives are to increase the availability of organs for transplant, ensure that kidney recipients are selected according to established criteria, and maintain the efficient operation of the Organ Donor Registry.

Organ Procurement
  • Coordinate the procurement process upon referral of a potential organ donor.
  • Explain and motivate relatives of potential deceased donors, who do not fall under HOTA, to give consent for organ and tissue donation.
  • Maintain contact with intensive care unit staff in hospitals.
  • Conduct death audits in various hospitals.
  • Identify process lapses and areas for improvement.
Kidney Allocation
  • Manage the selection of patients on the National Transplant Register for kidney transplants.
  • Registry Maintenance
  • Oversee the maintenance of the National Transplant Registry.
  • Coordinate with the pancreas program to establish the pancreas waitlist.
Administration
  • Assist in data collation and administrative duties of the National Organ Transplant Unit.
  • Schedule TEC meetings and provide secretariat support.
  • Collect and collate reports on potential organ donors.
Education
  • Engage in outreach programs for the public and hospital staff.
  • Coordinate teaching sessions for case managers.
Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Life Sciences, Social Science, Psychology, Social Work, or Nursing.
  • Other degrees may be considered if science subjects were part of the coursework at university or 'A' levels.
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
