Job Description

We are seeking a 6-month contract Research Assistant to join our team on the project “Mitigation Technology and Environmental Impact from Ammonia Bunkering Release”. The successful candidate will be working with a multidisciplinary team of atmosphere and marine biology scientists,and particularly be responsible for development of quantitative methods of accidental ammonia spills and fate in the marine environment. The candidate will work closely with our team of researchers to conduct aquarium experiments on the environmental impacts of ammonia bunkering and help develop mitigation strategies for potential negative impacts.

  • Conducting a series of incubation experiments of marine water under various ammonia enrichment scenarios. Measure a number of parameters at different time points of the incubation experiment.
  • Collecting and the experiment data related to marine environments response under enhanced ammonia.
  • Manage the purchasing and laboratory safety for the logistics related to the project.
  • Writing reports and summarizing research findings in a clear and concise manner.
Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor or master's degree in environmental science, engineering, earth science, oceanography, chemistry or a related field.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and problem solving skill in conducting research, especially conducting aquarium experiment.
  • Prior experience in conducting aquarium experiment is highly desired.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently at St Johns National Marine Laboratory and as part of a team.
  • Able to start work immediately.

The following skills are advantageous:

  • Prior experience with St Johns National Marine Laboratory is a plus.
  • Prior training on chemical and biological safety in laboratories.
  • Laboratory analytical chemistry skills. You will need to analyse a few parameters, including concentration of nutrient, chlorophyl, dissolved oxygen, etc.
  • Understanding of marine biogeochemistry is advantageous.
