Job summary

DIRECT SEARCH ASIA PTE. LTD. is seeking a Technical Superintendent to oversee safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of assigned vessels in Singapore.

The role requires a degree in Marine Engineering or related maritime discipline and relevant seafaring or ship management experience. The candidate should hold a Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency or have 2+ years as a Technical Superintendent, with strong knowledge of maintenance, dry-docking, and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Marine Engineering or related maritime discipline with 3+ years onboard or shipping experience.
  • Valid Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency with at least 2 years sailing as Chief Engineer.
  • Alternative: at least 2 years as Technical Superintendent with shipowner or ship management background.
  • Experience managing container vessels and/or bulk carriers.
  • Strong knowledge of vessel technical operations, maintenance, dry-docking, and regulatory compliance.
  • Good understanding of marine regulations, classification requirements, and international standards.
  • Experience in technical purchasing, budget preparation, expenditure monitoring, and cost control.
  • Strong leadership, planning, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of assigned vessels.
  • Maintain understanding of Safety and Quality Management System and its implementation across vessels.
  • Monitor compliance with company policies, procedures, and management system requirements across vessels.
  • Support development, review, and improvement of operational and technical procedures.
  • Promote continuous improvement in operations, safety, reliability, and cost management.
  • Monitor technical performance, maintenance status, and overall efficiency of vessels.
  • Collaborate with vessel management teams to address technical and operational issues promptly.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise repairs, maintenance activities, surveys, and dry-docking projects.
  • Ensure vessels remain fully certified and compliant with international conventions, flag-state and class requirements.
  • Monitor budgets and operating expenditure, ensuring cost control.
  • Manage technical purchasing and timely provision of spare parts and services.
  • Ensure vessels are properly manned according to regulatory and company requirements.
  • Prepare and submit accurate technical, operational, and financial reports to owners.
  • Encourage strong safety culture and environmental protection onboard.
  • Provide guidance to Masters, Chief Engineers, and shipboard personnel.
  • Liaise with classification societies, flag authorities, shipyards, contractors, suppliers.
  • Carry out vessel visits and inspections to assess conditions and follow up on outstanding matters.

Job description

  • Monitor vessel and departmental compliance with company policies, procedures, and management system requirements.
  • Support the development, review, and improvement of operational and technical procedures.
  • Promote continuous improvement initiatives across vessel operations, safety, reliability, and cost management.
  • Monitor the technical performance, operational condition, maintenance status, and overall efficiency of assigned vessels.
  • Work closely with vessel management teams to address technical and operational issues promptly and effectively.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise vessel repairs, maintenance activities, surveys, and dry-docking projects.
  • Ensure all vessels remain fully certified and compliant with applicable international conventions, flag-state requirements, class rules, and industry standards.
  • Monitor vessel budgets and operating expenditure, ensuring prudent financial management and effective cost control.
  • Manage technical purchasing activities and ensure the timely provision of spare parts, equipment, and services.
  • Ensure assigned vessels are appropriately manned in accordance with regulatory, operational, and company requirements.
  • Prepare and submit accurate technical, operational, and financial reports to vessel owners in accordance with the relevant ship management agreements.
  • Encourage a strong safety culture while promoting environmental protection and energy-efficiency awareness onboard assigned vessels.
  • Provide guidance and technical support to Masters, Chief Engineers, and other shipboard personnel.
  • Liaise with classification societies, flag authorities, shipyards, contractors, suppliers, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Carry out vessel visits and inspections to assess technical conditions, verify compliance, and follow up on outstanding matters.
Requirements
  • A recognised degree in Marine Engineering or a related maritime discipline, with at least three years of experience onboard vessels or within the shipping industry; or
  • A valid Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency with at least two years of sailing experience as Chief Engineer; or
  • A minimum of two years of relevant experience as a Technical Superintendent with a shipowner or ship management company.
  • Previous experience managing container vessels and/or bulk carriers is required.
  • Strong knowledge of vessel technical operations, planned maintenance, repairs, dry-docking, and regulatory compliance.
  • Good understanding of marine regulations, classification requirements, and applicable international standards.
  • Experience in technical purchasing, budget preparation, expenditure monitoring, and cost control.
  • Strong leadership, planning, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good command of written and spoken English.
