Job Description

Singapore's premier business daily, The Business Times is looking for meticulous individuals with an eye for detail who are ready to work in a fast-paced, real time environment to deliver high-quality content to our readers.

As a sub-editor, you are the first line of defence in publishing content created by reporters, correspondents and other content producers. You need to keep up to date with news developments and have a keen news sense and judgment, so that you are able to ensure stories are properly angled.

You will need to fine-tune the structure of a story so that it flows clearly, coherently and logically. You must be able to spot critical information gaps and pitfalls in a story. You are responsible for editing copy to ensure proper use of language, including grammar and syntax, and deliver copy that adheres to BT's house style.

You should be an experienced professional who has done a few years of work in news writing, editing and copy editing. You must have a passion for news and a keen awareness of current affairs. You need to pay strong attention to detail and deliver work that is of a high standard.

If you are new to the job, you need to show a willingness to learn as the learning curve will be steep and will take time.

The person we are looking for need to

  • Have a strong command of English, should be meticulous, have an eye for accuracy and detail.
  • Have a passion for news and a keen awareness of current affairs.
  • Should be familiar with Search Engine Optimisation, Internet-friendly headlines and social media platforms.
  • Have excellent editing and fact-checking skills
  • A self-motivated individual who is able to deliver the edited work within tight deadlines.
  • Prior experience with other news publications and media platforms would be highly valuable.
  • You are able to work independently while remaining a good team player.
  • Willingness to be rostered to work on shifts, weekends and/or public holidays.
  • Willing to learn the basics of layout and page design.
  • Willing to occasionally switch to AM shift to cover the team during those hours.
