Google DeepMind is seeking a Staff Research Engineer to lead development and deployment of innovative generative AI applications. You will rapidly build features and collaborate with partner teams to deliver high-impact solutions, translating AI research into real-world products.

The role emphasizes a strong software foundation, ownership in early-stage environments, and the ability to ship high-quality code across fast-paced contexts.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years in software development with one or more languages (e.g., Python) and data structures/algorithms.
• 5+ years in ML design and optimizing ML infrastructure (deployment, evaluation, data processing, debugging, fine-tuning) with experience in media generation or reinforcement learning.
• 5+ years testing and launching software products; 3+ years in software design/architecture.

Responsibilities

• Partner across internal and external teams to understand real-world AI challenges and define product objectives and technical designs.
• Curate specialized datasets, design evaluations across industry verticals, and fine-tune models for real-world performance.
• Lead engineering and development of novel solutions from 0 to 1 using internal platforms to build agents and workflows powered by foundation models.
• Share real-world evaluation learnings, edge cases, and deployment signals with core research teams to inform frontier model development.
• Act as technical lead for genAI deployment, setting best practices and demonstrating capabilities of frontier models end-to-end.
