Job description

Brief Summary:

The Staff Engineer, Metrology is the resident authority on metrology matters in Europe and Asia. He/she is responsible for proposing, budgeting, developing and implementing metrology solutions to enhance EO’s competitiveness in the high-end optics market. He/she provides technical leadership to the cadre of engineers, promoting consultation and collaboration, identifying their training needs, and providing guidance and constructive feedback. In addition, the Staff Engineer Metrology also scans the market continuously for convenient processes and/or measurement equipment to fulfil the expectations of EO’s customers. He/she works closely with internal and external partners, prepares decision papers and leads implementation projects.


Job Description:

  • Design, develop, configure and implement metrology solutions and/or measurement processes which will optimize efficiencies, stabilize yield and enhance EO’s capabilities, from concept to pilot phase.
  • Recommend, acquire, implement and optimize new metrology equipment.
  • Propose and lead projects to enhance EO’s metrology capabilities overall, identifying risks utilizing tools such as DFMEA and PFMEA.
  • Define metrology monitoring plans and ensure consistent and efficient operation.
  • Provide timely support to the relevant teams on the running of metrology through pilot phase and into production phase including training, troubleshooting and monitoring.
  • Provide technical direction on matters related to metrology to QA and OPS engineers, provide training and guidance on continuous improvement projects as well as day to day problem solving.
  • Decision making and risk management on non-standard RFQs, which includes advice on development resources required to fulfill customer requirements or to take reasonable exceptions.
  • Liaise with RFQ team, Program Management, Sales and customers to identify gaps, align expectations and develop solutions for key customer accounts.
  • Coordinate with Operational Excellence initiatives to align continuous improvement activities in line with current development goals and requirements.
  • Report the status and progress of assigned projects in a regular, timely and accurate manner to the Director of Technology and other stakeholders.
  • Provide technological advice to customers and assist technical marketing via authoring of papers, patents, or other external media and attend internal and external workshops and conferences.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by management.

Qualifications Required:

  • MSc or PhD in a relevant Engineering or Scientific field.
  • 8 or more years of experience in Metrology, a plus if in the field of optics.

Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrable LEAN and Six Sigma knowledge, particularly of Gauge R&R processes.
  • Knowledge of optical industry products, supplies, consumables and test equipment such as White-Light and/or Fizeau Interferometers, 2D and 3D, contact and non-contact Profilometers, Autocollimators and/or Spectrophotometers is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge in Optical Fabrication, Optical Metrology, Optical Physics, Opto-Mechanical principles, Optical Design and other technical areas within the Optical Industry is a plus.
  • Experience with Design of Experiments and ANOVA testing.
  • Effective communicator, both written and oral, and organizer with strong project leading skills.
  • Solid team player, strong interpersonal skills in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment.
  • Analytical problem solving and attention to detail.
  • Highly self-driven and ability to work independently.
