Job summary

Tan Tock Seng Hospital is seeking a Sr / Medical Laboratory Technologist for the Blood Transfusion Service in the Department of Laboratory Medicine. You will perform diagnostic tests on patient specimens and report results according to established protocols to aid clinicians in diagnosis and treatment.

You will check results, maintain transfusion records, and prepare blood products while advising clinicians on preparation, storage and administration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Laboratory Medicine or related field.
• Diploma holders may be considered for Junior Medical Technologist.
• Able to work 3-rotating-shift patterns, including weekends and public holidays.
• Requires good organisation, coordination, communication and computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory testing for Blood Transfusion Services’ specimens per work instructions.
• Verify results, investigate delta flags/unusual results, and certify results promptly.
• Maintain records (transfusion records, reaction records, release forms) accurately.
• Prepare and issue blood and blood products including emergency uncross-matched blood.
• Advise doctors and nurses on patient preparation, issuing and storage of products.
• Perform quality control on reagents, standards, controls and materials; take corrective actions when needed.
• Troubleshoot instrument malfunctions or QC issues and initiate corrective action.
• Organise workflow according to urgency, including emergency releases.
• Comply with licensing, regulatory and accreditation requirements; participate in QA programs.
• Support Section Leader in operational and administrative matters.

Job Summary

You will perform a wide variety of diagnostic tests on patient specimens and report results of the tests according to established protocols in the Blood Transfusion Service of the Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) to help clinicians diagnose, treat diseases, and monitor therapy.

• Performs laboratory testing for Blood Transfusion Services’ specimens in accordance to the policies and procedures as outlined in the work instructions.
• Checks that results are accurate and investigates any delta flags / unusual results before certifying the results in a timely manner.
• Ensures that all records (e.g. transfusion records, transfusion reaction records, transfusion release forms) are appropriately completed and filed (manually or electronically).
• Prepares and issues blood and blood products (including emergency, uncross-matched blood) for transfusion in accordance to the policies and procedures as outlined in the work instructions.
• Advises doctors and nurses on patient preparation, issuing of blood and blood products, administration and return of those products, storage requirements, and special precautions.
• Performs quality control on reagents, standards, controls, and all other testing materials and follows up with corrective actions, if required.
• Troubleshoots instrument malfunction or unacceptable quality control results, and initiates corrective action when necessary.
• Organises work according to urgency, e.g. release of emergency, uncross-matched blood.
• Complies with the requirements set by the various licensing, regulatory and accrediting agencies. Participates in internal and external quality assurance programmes, e.g. CAP and RCPA.
• Supports the Section Leader in operational and administrative matters.

Requirements

• Preferably Bachelor's Degree in Laboratory Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or any other equivalent qualification.
• Candidates with Diploma in Biomedical Sciences, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, Biotechnology, Life Sciences or any other equivalent qualification may be considered for the position of Junior Medical Technologist.
• Possesses team work, good organisation, coordination, communication, and computer skills.
• Able to work3-rotating-shift work patterns, including staggered and extended working hours, and coverage after hours and onweekends and public holidaysto meet the needs of the department and hospital.
