Job Description

  • Primary responsibility is to ensure that students have appropriate written individual education plans and that these plans are being implemented in all school settings.
  • Plans must be developed following a process that reviews and considers all relevant factors including assessment data, curriculum-based measurements, and input from all team members.
  • Responsible for monitoring the plan to ensure program compliance: that required timelines are observed; that direct services, accommodations, modifications, and other services indicated on the plan are implemented in all school settings; and that the student benefits from the services provided.
  • Communicate with the Principal: ensure the principal has a list of all students for whom the teacher is responsible and access to those students’ IEPs. Notify the principal if any part of a student’s plan is not being implemented appropriately despite efforts to correct issues through consultation with other school personnel.
  • Keep all confidential documents, such as IEPs and evaluations, in a secure location (locked cabinets), including computer files.
  • Manage Special Education Assistant Teacher(s): express expectations; hold regular conferences; provide feedback; clarify disciplinary practices and classroom routines.
  • Maintain regular contact with parents: send positive notes, keep them informed of school events, and send progress reports as indicated in the IEP.
  • Manage behavior programs: develop and maintain student behavior management programs; communicate with teachers and other involved personnel regarding these programs.
