Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Ship Master to take full command of a container vessel, ensuring operational efficiency, compliance, and the safety of all onboard. This leadership role requires strong technical competence, regulatory awareness, and the ability to manage both crew and shipboard operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the vessel’s seaworthiness and readiness in line with the planned voyage schedule
  • Lead and manage ship officers and crew, overseeing activities such as:
    Compliance with relevant operational rules, cargo handling instructions, and contractual obligations
    Execution of maritime safety and environmental policies
    Enforcement of safety and security procedures in accordance with local, national, and international requirements
    Maintenance and review of shipboard documentation, including vessel certificates, navigation manuals, and crew qualifications
    Oversight of environmental and safety-related procedures and activities
    Evaluation and maintenance of contingency and emergency response procedures
  • Take overall responsibility for the ship’s Safety Management System (SMS) and report directly to the Designated Person Ashore (DPA), including:
    Reporting safety-related defects, risks of pollution, or operational concerns
    Reporting accidents and non-conformities involving personnel or procedures
    Assigning responsibilities to senior officers within the SMS framework
    Ensuring that regular audits are conducted and that the SMS is maintained and up to date
    Keeping all safety-related records accurate and current
  • Ensure all crew possess valid and compliant certifications in accordance with MARPOL, SOLAS, STCW, and ISPS conventions
  • Ensure that required onboard training programs are carried out and completed

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Holds a valid Certificate of Competency (Deck Officer) Class 1
  • Has at least 4 years of experience serving as Ship Master on board container vessels
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and a safety-first mindset
  • Fully conversant with international maritime regulations and conventions
  • Experienced in implementing and maintaining a Safety Management System
