The Senior Scientist Graphics/Visualization Tools will play a key role in enhancing the graphics, visualizations and overall experience of data submitted to a leading platform that is part of a global network for priority pathogen genome and metadata sharing, serving over 60,000 registered users. This role focuses on delivering tools for users to analyze and visualize pathogen genomic data, contributing directly to global public health efforts.
The candidate will work across multidisciplinary teams to support the development, customization, and integration of data visualization platforms, trackers, and reports. The role is essential to enabling scientists, policymakers, and public health professionals to derive insights from genomic data related to priority and emerging pathogens.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and refinement of interactive dashboards, trackers, and graphical reports to support real time analysis and visualization of genomic data.
- Enhance the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) of visualization tools to ensure accessibility, responsiveness, and clarity across devices and user groups.
- Contribute to the maintenance, scalability, and interoperability of tools and ensure alignment with evolving user needs.
- Collaborate with bioinformatics, software engineering, and curation teams to integrate data from multiple sources into cohesive, user friendly platforms.
- Implement visualization pipelines that support outbreak monitoring, variant tracking, and public health surveillance.
- Monitor tool performance and engage with users to gather feedback for continuous improvement.
- Document workflows, usage guidelines, and technical specifications for internal and external users.
- Stay current with trends in scientific visualization, UI/UX design, and data communication.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior developers or scientists working on visual analytics.
Job Requirements:
- PhD or Master degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Data Visualization, or a related field, with experience in scientific visualization or user interface development.
- Strong portfolio of past work in building visual analytics tools or dashboards (preferably for biological or public health data).
- Proficiency in modern web technologies (e.g., JavaScript, D3.js, React, or equivalent).
- Experience with data visualization libraries, APIs, and frameworks for interactive graphics and dashboards (e.g., Plotly, Chart.js, ggplot2, Matplotlib, Seaborn etc).
- Familiarity with bioinformatics data formats and databases is an advantage.
- Experience in integrating backend systems with frontend applications to support dynamic data updates.
- Knowledge of UX/UI best practices and a strong user focused mindset.
- Excellent communication skills to interact with multidisciplinary teams and translate scientific requirements into visual tools.
