Job description

What if the work you did every day could impact the lives of people you know? Or all of humanity? At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity for billions of people around the world. Our efforts enable life-changing discoveries that are transforming human health through the early detection and diagnosis of diseases and new treatment options for patients. Working at Illumina means being part of something bigger than yourself. Every person, in every role, has the opportunity to make a difference. Surrounded by extraordinary people, inspiring leaders, and world-changing projects, you will do more and become more than you ever thought possible.

Illumina is the global leader in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology. Through relentless innovation, Illumina has reduced the cost of sequencing a human genome from hundreds of thousands of dollars to $200 today. The drastic cost reduction has moved NGS from the laboratory to the clinic, with wide-ranging impact from cancer diagnostics to genetic testing. We invite you to join us in our effort to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome.

We are currently looking for a Scientist to join our Molecular Sciences Group. Resourceful individuals with wide-ranging scientific interests, who enjoy a fast-paced, hard-charging, but fun and collaborative interdisciplinary research environment will be a good fit. As part of the team, you will be developing future sequencing and library preparation biochemistries with a focus on enzymatic processes.

Senior Scientist employees are expected to be significantly autonomous and technically proficient. They should be able to execute assigned tasks with minimal oversight as well as troubleshoot procedural problems that may arise. Primary responsibilities include research and development of new protein mutants. This would include cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins, as well as screening for positive mutants through biochemical assays.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs experiments of varying complexity and across a broad array of techniques, foresees issues and works to overcome obstacles to completing tasks or assignments, conceives of new ways to analyze the data and present it.
  • Plans, conducts, summarizes, reports consistent conclusions to aid in team decision-making.
  • Contribute to ongoing internal research projects in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Takes responsibility for training others, raising the consistency and quality of data collection of the team, establishes criteria and/or work procedures to achieve a high level of quality and productivity.
  • Keeps detailed lab notebooks, prepares reports, updates, and summaries for managers and teams as directed.

Listed responsibilities are an essential, but not exhaustive list, of the usual duties associated with the position. Changes to individual responsibilities may occur due to business needs.
