Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Scientific Officer’s primary role will be to design, oversee, conduct and further scientific research in the group, as aligned with the group’s objectives as the Applied Genomics Core. He/she will keep abreast of the scientific literature, in particular with regards to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of public health importance and independently design, plan, supervise experiments/projects. He/she will supervise research assistants and attached undergraduate and graduate students. He/she is expected to work closely with academic and industry collaborators from other institutions. He/she should develop scientific expertise in a specialized field, but continue to possess broad-based knowledge so as to provide scientific leadership in the group. He/she will critically assess and provide scientific input to projects supported by the group. He/she will also analyze and present data, and write scientific papers for publication and be involved in administrative activities.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

SPECIFIC

  1. Manage a team to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget
  2. Develop research proposals, budgets, and timelines for new projects
  3. Participate in strategic-planning activities, such as identifying new research opportunities, assessing potential clinical translation of research, and developing long-term research plans
  4. Review scientific publications to keep up to date with the current knowledge in relevant fields
  5. Lead research conduct and develop new methodologies in order to advance knowledge within the group and in the group’s area of interest
  6. Communicate scientific findings, such as through published research papers or presentations at scientific conferences, both locally and internationally
  7. Help foster collaborations with other academic institutions and industry partners.

GENERAL

  1. Fulfill all duties and responsibilities assigned.
  2. Adhere to all general hospital and laboratory policies concerning dress code, professional conduct, attendance / punctuality, documentation, performance criteria and other directives as issues.
  3. Comply with research ethics and patient confidentiality.
  4. Comply with all safety regulations and infection control policies / procedures stipulated by the laboratory / TTSH / NCID.
  5. Help promote a working environment of collegiality and teamwork.
  6. Any other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

  • PhD in a relevant discipline such as Microbiology, Biomedical/Life Sciences, Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology, Public Health etc.

EXPERIENCE

  • At least 3 to 5 years of post-doctoral experience working in a research / clinical / public health laboratory. Candidates should ideally have experience in both research and clinical/public health laboratory work.
  • Prior experience in publication of research findings would be an advantage.
