Overview

This position is a 1 year contract. The job-holder is responsible for providing personalised, specialised and cost-effective care to all patients (including research patients) in accordance to established hospital policies and procedures, standards of nursing care and practices. The job holder deputizes the Nurse Manager in his/her absence.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities and Duties (80%)

  • Help to recruit, support and take care of patients for research studies under guidance of study Principal Investigators.
  • Assesses patients’ needs on admission and daily throughout their hospital stay.
  • Plans and implements patient care according to the assessed needs.
  • Evaluates and monitors patients’ progress according to the planned care.
  • Documents care and monitors outcomes on the established charts/forms.
  • Carries out treatments and investigations as prescribed by physicians.
  • Communicates and discusses patients’ progress and response to treatment with physicians, nursing and allied health colleagues involved in the patient care.
  • Follows-up to ensure continuity of patient care and treatment plans.
  • Delivers safe and competent nursing care.
  • Participates actively in physicians’ rounds.
  • Prepares and assists physicians with the procedures done on patient.
  • Collaborates and co-operates with physicians and other health-care providers in the smooth delivery of patient care and services.
  • Demonstrates clinical skills, knowledge and critical thinking in the delivery of patient care.
  • Displays compassion, a positive and caring attitude towards patients as well as to internal and external clients.
  • Provides patient/family information and education on disease prevention, health education and rehabilitation techniques.
  • Demonstrates proper use and care of equipment.
  • Demonstrates proper and economical usage of consumables and supplies.
  • Maintains a clean and safe working environment.
  • Precepts, coaches and counsels staff in their work, patient safety and risk management activities as well as nursing students on posting.
  • Assumes the role of Staff Nurse in-charge/Deputy Nurse Manager.
  • Facilitates team dynamics and the smooth running of activities in the ward/dept.
  • Supports new initiates/lead changes implemented by the Nursing Administration.
  • Demonstrates competency in all core competencies and unit specific programs implemented by Nursing Administration.
  • Applies critical thinking skills and works closely with NM/NC to manage complex patient care and initiating referrals appropriately.
  • Initiates and participates in case conference between patient/family, physician and/or other health-care professionals on complex patient care management.
  • Anticipates and manages public relation aspects of the ward/dept.
  • Acts as a resource person in advanced medical and surgical nursing care as well as procedures.

Secondary Responsibilities and Duties (20%)

  • Participates in other research, clinical or service quality activities.
  • Demonstrates awareness of current nursing and health care practices.
  • Prepares roster and daily staff assignment for the ward/dept.
  • Contributes to the evaluation of staff performance appraisal with Nurse Manager.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned by Nursing Officers, Senior Nursing Officers, Assistant/Deputy Director (Nursing) and Chief Nurse.
Requirements
  • Diploma in Nursing or Degree in Nursing from recognized training institution as approved by the Singapore Nursing Board.
  • Preferably 5 years of post-registration clinical experience, of which 2 years must be as Senior Staff Nurse II.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Word/Excel.
  • Possesses good inter-personal and supervisory skills.
  • Display compassion and have a positive and caring attitude.
