As a Senior Medical Technologist (Phlebotomy Section Lead), you will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Oversee the efficient operation of inpatient Phlebotomy Services, ensuring Phlebotomists are properly trained in venepuncture and comply with established procedures and policies.

  • Manages resource utilisation within the section (staff, supplies, equipment, and budgets) while overseeing daily and monthly staff deployment to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Monitors departmental quality indicators (e.g., errors, contamination rates) and ensures corrective actions are taken when needed.

  • Ensures documents are managed per department policy, kept up to date for accreditation and licensing, and that staff review and acknowledge relevant documents.

  • Leads the development and review of job instructions and process improvements, ensuring staff are trained and equipped to perform their duties safely and correctly.

  • Ensures new staff receive proper orientation, onboarding, and sufficient training to perform competently before confirmation.

  • Provides on-the-job training, lectures, and workshops for new staff, and leads phlebotomy training for cross-departmental staff and medical students.

  • Monitors staff competencies and performance, and conducts annual total performance management reviews.

  • Collaborates with other sections and departments to implement initiatives and projects, including business continuity plans and quality improvement efforts.

  • Carries out venepuncture following established policies and procedures when necessary.

  • Responsible for supervising, coaching, motivating, and resolving conflicts among staff.
