Senior Lab Technician (Biology & Chemistry)
Location: Connexions Integrated Learning Hub, One Holland Village
Job Scope
- To support the day-to-day operations of a small-scale, inclusive lab environment focused on applied biology and chemistry activities such as organism growing, plant tissue culture, essential oil extraction and natural formulation.
Key Responsibilities
Lab Operations & Safety
- Support the setup, calibration, and maintenance of lab equipment
- Ensure safety procedures are followed at all times, particularly by neurodiverse participants and senior volunteers.
- Maintain cleanliness and sterility of work areas, especially during aseptic processes.
- Track and manage inventory of chemicals, biological materials, and consumables.
- Assist in developing and refining standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Product Workflow Support
- Assist in the production
- Document workflows, yields, and issues for process improvement.
Inclusive Support & Mentorship
- Provide respectful, patient, hands-on guidance to neurodiverse young adults involved in lab tasks.
- Adjust workflows for different abilities.
Data & Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of experiments, procedures, and outcomes.
- Assist with quality control and logging of final products for safe storage or display.
- Help compile data for research, funding reports, or partner presentations.
Public Engagement & Education
- Assist with lab tours or outreach events to showcase inclusive innovation.
- Support the preparation of materials for educational displays.
- Occasionally contribute to community workshops or demos.
Collaboration & Reporting
- Work closely with the Lab Manager and programme leads to coordinate project timelines.
- Report regularly on lab progress, issues, and proposed improvements.
- Liaise with external vendors or institutions when needed (e.g., for sample testing or sourcing).
Qualifications & Skills
- Diploma or degree in Biology, Chemistry, Life Sciences, or related field.
- Prior experience in a lab setting is preferred.
- Passion for inclusion, community service, or social impact work.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Comfortable working in a mixed-ability environment.
- Strong interpersonal communication and mentoring abilities.
