Job summary

Housing & Development Board in Singapore invites a research-focused engineer to advance passive design strategies within public housing projects. Qualifications

  • Relevant educational background in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architecture, or related field.
  • Advanced knowledge of CFD simulation methodologies.
  • Proficiency in CFD software (such as ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or similar).
  • Understanding of building physics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics principles.
  • Knowledge and experience in application of passive design strategies in tropical climates.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive macro and micro-scale environmental assessments for the built environment using CFD simulation and advanced modeling software to inform design decisions for ventilation, energy efficiency and wind-driven rain.
  • Analyse microclimate conditions to create evidence-based design recommendations and targets.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including architects, urban planners, external consultants and IHLs to conduct R&D studies and carry out testbeds to develop and validate sustainable solutions.
  • Translate research concepts into practical applications that can be implemented in real-world settings.
  • Design and execute testbed projects that demonstrate the performance of innovative sustainable design strategies and technologies.
  • Perform rigorous testing and data collection, evaluate results, and present findings to support scaling of successful solutions across public housing developments.

What The Role Is

Join our innovative R&D team within the Building & Research Institute to pioneer sustainable design solutions that enhance quality of life in urban environments. This role focuses on developing and implementing cutting‑edge passive design strategies, directly contributing to Singapore's vision of sustainable public housing and livable cities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive macro and micro‑scale environmental assessments for the built environment using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and advanced modeling software. Your work will inform design decisions that optimise natural ventilation, thermal comfort, energy efficiency and reduce undesirable environmental factors such as wind‑driven rain in urban developments.
  • Analyse microclimate conditions to create evidence‑based design recommendations and targets.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including architects, urban planners, external consultants and IHLs to conduct R&D studies and carry out actual testbeds to develop and validate sustainable solutions.

What We Are Looking For
Essential Requirements
  • Relevant educational background in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architecture, or related field with strong foundation in engineering principles.
  • Advanced knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation methodologies and requirements.
  • Proficiency in environmental modelling software (such as ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or similar CFD platforms).
  • Understanding of building physics, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics principles.
  • Knowledge and experience in application of passive design strategies in tropical climates.

The successful candidate will be offered a 1+1 year contract. Subject to the department's needs and the individual's performance, there may be opportunities for contract renewal or conversion to a permanent position.
